Hello all, I’m about to embark in the 1/48 Hasegawa Ki-84 (it will be a WIP on here). I want to do a scheme that is out of the normal IJA Green, therefore, the particular subject I’m contemplating is “Medium Brown” over light grey in home defense markings. Does anyone know which Tamiya paints are to be mixed to get this Medium Browm or is the XF-52 Flat Earth suffice. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe
Were the Ki-84s painted brown? I thought maybe Nakajima’s version of dark green. Hasegawa calls for a wood brown color on their Ki-44 kit. I’d say start with your flat earth and add some red-brown or wood brown til it looks alittle deeper and richer. Or…Tamiya’s olive drab with some brown?
I think you should mix it to your own “taste” , since there is no specific brown colour for Japanese Army planes, there were even KI-84’s that were dark brown ( chocolate).
I believe, if I’m correct , the Franks of the Shinbu-tai unit were in different shades of brown. Ranging from green -brown to chocolate brown.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Japanese subjects are not my strongpoint. Nathan, I think the brown on the KI-44 you are refering to is what I’m supposed to be going for. Since there is no definitive color this is supposed to be, I will probably either mix my own concoction (like I always do for Olive Drab), or chose one of the green options. I have the Sky Models decal sheet with like 20 options on it, so I should be able to chose one. I do like the KI-84 as a plane, but I find their schemes somewhat boring and the “lightning bolts” that are common on the tail seem well…out of place on a WW II fighter. I’m not big on the heavy chipping either which to me takes away from the overall look, so my options are limited I guess. I’ll likely decide at the last minute like I always do. Thanks again…
