Tamiya Nakajima K184-IA Hayate (Frank) WIP

I’ve been back at this hobby in the neighborhood of 8 months now and I finally found a pic hosting site I am happy with so I thought I’d try posting a few pics of my current WIP. I build for my own personal satisfaction and to escape from the worries of life. Everything I do is OOB at the moment and not always historically accurate. I am currently working with painting as much Insignia and other markings as I can because it’s challenging and more fun than doing decals. I like using the black basing technique though I have played around with others and still will from time to time for a little variety. These are just simple pics taken with my ipad.

This is a very simple, old kit to build and so far has been a lot of fun.

It goes together real quick great for a first build. The cockpit is without detail.

I don’t know why I didn’t paint the wheel wells on the sprue when I painted all the other blue. Just one of those duh moments.

Canopy all masked up with Parafilm (I love that stuff).

Black base was done with stynilrez.

I use Tamiya acrylics for all my painting. This was silver chrome, and I also used some flat aluminum as well. Funny I’m posting a silver paint job as my first post considering it’s my least favorite color to work with.

My first attempt at painting the insignia. I chose the easiest of them to attempt first. They were done with straight Tamiya flat red.

Clear coat (pledge) applied and canopy unmasked, the parafilm comes off easily with a toothpick. This is it for now hoping to finish this up in a day or two and I’ll post when it’s finished unless I do something to screw it up, I sometimes have an uncanny knack for doing that.

That looks good!

Hi Tickmagnet (hehe, love your callsign)

Great job on your quick build! The painted Hinomarus look real good [Y]

I use Tamiya paints a lot too. I find that for the metallic colors, the metal flakes in Tamiya acrylics are quite coarse. Their enamel metallics are much better. Do give their enamel metallics a try.

Now that’s an oldie but a goodie! Nice progress, she’s lookin’ sharp!!!

Thanks guys it’s really been a fun build to this point.

Thanks for the tip Edwin. The call sign came about because my wife told me I get a tick on me every time I go outside and I said I guess I’m just a real tick magnet and it kinda stuck.

I got a little more painting done. I thought I’d be done by now but things don’t always allow you the time you need. Looks like I’m going to get through this one without having to use decals so I’m really happy about that.

Very nice, looks like you’re having fun and getting great results!

Thanks Mrmike I still have lot’s to learn and improve on and I’m having a blast doing it.

Not too shabby for a beginner. By your name you must have a fast car…lol.

Thanks I’m having a great time relearning old and learning new.

Well I completed it so I thought I’d post a finished pic or two.

I am currently using pastels to add weathering and I start with a pastel wash then flat clear coat over that and dry brush some pastels as well as a little chipping with a silver pencil. Then when I’m satisfied with it, I hit it with another flat clear coat.

And that’s a wrap.

Turned out great. Same weathering method I use to use before I discovered Flory Washes and AK Interactive Oils. Thanks for sharing your work. “Tick” magnet…not “Ticket” magnet. Insect…not traffic court summons…I’m a tool…lol.

Thanks Lawdog 114 and no it’s straight “tick”. I live in the Ozarks and can’t go outside in warmer weather without picking up a tick or two so I earned the moniker Tickmagnet. By the way I was on the job for 11 years how long for you or are you retired or does your name have another meaning. I’m assuming the 114 is your badge number or DSN.

She came out pretty darn fine to me!

Nice work! [Y]

Thanks Gamera.
