Is the grain structure the same in the bottled Liquid Surface Primer as in the rattle can Fine Surface Primer?
I picked up a bottle of LSP today, thinned it 1:1 and primed some spoons and squares of styrene sheet. Did the same with decanted FSP. If there’s any difference between the two, it would take some ridiculously careful observation to detect it. Certainly not enough to justify decanting, IMO.
I picked up a bottle of LSP to try. What pressure / tip size for airbrush do you use?
When I shoot mine through my Paasche H, I use the #1 needle/air cap at 20 PSI or less. Just thin it for a skim milk consistency before putting it in your airbrush cup. I use the little Dixie paper bathroom cups as mixing cups. They hold up just fine to solvent-based paints and primers like Tamiya LSP in either the bottle or can. I like mixing before anything goes in the airbrush so I know I won’t have little pockets of thinner and thicker paint from incomplete mixing.
I thin mine with MEK, so if you’re using something other than that, I’m not sure what works well and what doesn’t. All I know of other possible thinners is that it doesn’t react well to isopropyl alcohol…that almost instantly turns it to cottage cheese. Lacquer thinner would probably work though.

I think you will find most people thin lacquer primer with LT, which is what the Tamiya product is.
I use Fine surface primer exclusivly shot through my Iwata with .5 needle, straight decanted. Since I use the larger needle I no longer thin, but when I did I used LT or Mr Hobby leveling thinner. Either way I always sand with 3K padded paper for a ultra smooth surface, then paint.

I am glad you clarified what you were referring too. I was thinking" LSP v.FSP" what the Heck is that?" Of course I wouldn’t really know. When I had an airbrush I used a common Primer thinned after decanting 1:1. The Primer? Krylon Surface primer in Dove Grey!
