I’ve just returned to the model world after a while away (20 years or so!) Done a few smaller kits but now want to start on the armour of WWII. I have the Tamiya King Tiger 1/35 and not a big fan of the track supplied. I baught the Hobb Boss replacements of Ebay (about $10 so not expensive). The problem I have is I want to assemble as much of the track as possible off the kit and want to make sure I get the drop right on the upper section of track. As it appears I have to glue each track to the next (if it clicks together I can see it) I’m looking for a simple way to replicate the drop on both sides for accuracy.
This is my first try at extra parts so want it to look good after all the work and cost.
Use this link for the Doog’s track tutorial on Armorama. It is exactly what /how you need to make those tracks look good. I screwed up and it will take you to page two first but you’ll figure that out LOL!
Let us know what you think of those HobbyBoss links and how you got on?
I tried the PzIV links, they were certainly better than the rubber band kit tracks, but not overly impressed. I just got some of the Tamiya King Tiger seperate links to try, they were about the next price level up from the HobbyBoss.
I used the hobbyboss tracks on my 17cm Grille from Trumpeter, the kit supplied tracks were too long and did not want to stay glued together(used normal glue and ca glue , both didn’t work). I was pleasantly surprised on the quality of the Hobbyboss tracks, there are injection pin marks but they are in the inside of the guide horns and are hard to see and clean up at the attachment point on the sprue was very easy if needed at all. For the cost I highly recommend them.
OK so for anyone interested I have a plan on how to do this after looking at a few sites and had a good think about it all.
First stage is to make up the road wheels and drive wheels. Use masking tape on the hull of the tank and cover all the area behind where the track will sit and the wheels, drive wheels etc. With this and the wheels dry fitted put the original Tamiya track in place and simply run a pencil down what would be the top of the tracks.
Remove everything from the hull and carefull remove the masking tape. Transfer this to some strong card. Now cut along the line you now have. Now you have the start of a template, cut a second side using this and you have the start of a gig to assemble the track pieces off the model. Easy enough to do from here I think. I’ve not had chance to do this yet as work is getting in the way of life again. When I do I’m happy to post images if anyone wants to see
