Tamiya FAMO

I am thinking aout building the FAMO and wonder if any of you guys have tackled this kit. I would also like to know that types of tanks would fit on the trailer.

I have the FAMO kit in the stash but have yet to build it. Having built a number of Tamiya kits I can say that they go together rather nicely without a lot of fuss.
The trailer that comes in the BIG FAMO kit was rated to haul Panzer III/IV based tanks. The Germans did have another trailer rated to haul Tiger I & Panther tanks. I am not near my references right now so I don’t have the specs or actual designation of that trailer.
Cheers

I built the FAMO without the trailer. Wonderful kit. Typical Tamiya. Great fit. Good level of detail. Full crew. I filled mine up with stowage. I have another with the trailer in the stash. Can’t help with the hauling capacity question though.

I got one of these as a birthday present a month or so ago. It’s a brilliant kit - typical late 1990s Tamiya. There’s plenty of aftermarket, but none that is actually needed. If you Google ‘Tamiya 1/35 FAMO’, you’ll find a number of reviews. I also recently got one of Dragon’s new-ish 1/35 Sd.Kfz.7 (late production) kits, and it’s intersting to see how Dragon’s approach to a fundamentally similar (if smaller) vehicle compares to Tamiya’s.

The trailer that Tamiya make for the FAMO is a Sd.Ab. 116, which could take tanks up to and including late-mark Pz.IVs, but nothing larger. In fact, this trailer was only rated at 23 tonnes, so at 25 tonnes, a late-mark Pz.IV was a bit of an overload, but do-able. Im not aware of any kit of the larger trailers, of which there were three - rated at 45, 60 and 68 tonnes respectively. To recover and/ or tow Pz.Vs and VIs, it was necessary to use two or even three FAMOs - the kit instructions show you how this was done.

Get yourself one - it’s an example of the plastic scale model kit at its most sublime.

Cheers,

Chris.
