Tamiya F-51d 1/48

Alclads with kit decals and alclad clear semi matt ocer all to dull down the “metal” as most Korea Mustprangs were. Silver on the rudder shows new alluminium dope on the fabric.

Note the different rates the undercart doors are drooping

I drilled out the exhausts and guns.

Looks good. Very nice Mustang!

The Tamyia P-51 D (and the B) are excellent kits. You have done a stunning job on this one. The old designation “P” was for pursuit and the later “F” designation is for fighter. Anyone know when that designation changed. As for the main landing gear inner door “droop”, that happens after the engine is shut down and the hydrolic pressure bleeds down. The inner main gear doors drop ( “droop”) and the flaps also drop. Anyone know which block number was the beginning of aluminum covered control surfaces, that is the end of fabric covered control surfaces on the P-51s.

Were the flaps actuated hydrolic or electric screw jack?

That’s a good looking mustang, great job on the paint.

Very nice looking Mustang!

Thanx Mike, I thought you might like the nose art

Great looking "stang.

The gear doors were hydraulic. The pressure bled off when parked so they would hang down. Once the engine stared the doors would come up again. When the gear was raised they would open then lcose over the wheels.

Here’s a vid of the start up part

This vid is of the gear going up You can just see them open and close before it gets too far away.

That second P-51 in the you tube link Mustang Sally" is based here in South Africa.

A few years back I was invited by the Air Force base to fly my Piper L-18c in US ARMY colors to the base for a show.

I was parked close to that Stang and I must admit , I was rather surprised to hear how “rough” the Merlyn sounded when idling, not at all as smooth drone when flying. It almost sounded like a top fuel dragster.

The US Air Force started September 18, 1947 from the US Army Air Force so the designation change was right after that.

Pretty bird! Nice effect with the drooping doors!

I love the post-war uncuffed props. Look so great on a 51

Beautiful NMF. The gear door creeping is a nice touch. I do that to my Mustangs all the time…adds interest. Thanks for sharing.

Joe

Nice Stang !

Beautiful work, I too like the way you did the gear doors- very cool.

I did happen to notice that. [H]
