This is my first time posting a model in years! High school really does take up my time these days.
Anyway, this is my finished Tamiya/Eduard FW190A9. I had originally started building the Eduard A9 but my gosh, it was the worst model I had ever tried to build. Nothing seemed to fit, I never really had a grasp on how the whole engine and wing assembly was supposed to work, and ended up giving up on a kit for the first time in my life. My Eduard F6F was a masterpiece of engineering so I have no idea if the 190 disaster was on my end or Eduard’s. Anyways, Tamiya to the rescue! I bought their FW190A8/R2 kit and got to work making it an A9. Blown canopy, 14 blade fan, wide props, etc. The model from start to finish took only 3 days. I was able to use all the Eduard photoetch in the Tamiya cockpit and used their decals to make an A9. Paints are Model Master RLM76, Tamiya olive green for RLM83, and RLM 81 was a mix of Tamiya khaki drab and hull red. (2:1). Under the wing, Aluminum done with alclad… wait for it… aluminum. The weathering process involved preshading panel lines black, then random dark grey splotches were sprayed, followed by the camoflage, black pinwash, A&K steaking grime, soot, mig pigments for tires, and finally all sealed with flat acrylic. I left off chipping, the plane couldnt’t have been in service more than a few months before the war ended. Markings are from Eduard, an FW190A9 from 1945 at Wels Am Wagram Airbase in Austria. I added the prop spinner spiral decal for fun but I’m not sure its accurate to this specific A9. I provided pics of the cockpit to show it off before it was sealed up. The dioram base is very basic and incomplete but it made a better base than my counter for photos! I just realized I haven’t painted the landing lights… oops. Something for tomorrow! Really good work all around. My only nitpick is those eduard PE belts they just never look right to me and are a pita to pose right. Base and figures look great to btw.
Nice work! Welcome to the FSM forum. Indeed those original release 190s are a pain in the a@@. That’s why they redesigned it and made it more user friendly. I think they are starting to realize nobody wants all those panels open as most prefer clean lines. I agree about the belts. Next time try bending them up a bit with tweezers which will help them lay better against the seat. Thank you for sharing your work and it’s nice to see youngsters in the lost art of scale modeling. All is not lost.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone!! I was shocked to see how many replies I got, maybe I should post my models more often! I agree with the seatbelts, thanks for the tips on how to make them look better… Now to decide what to do next: finish my 1/200 Missouri or start my Accurate Miniatures Avenger… hmmm…
It looks really good. The Eduard 190As have the reputation of being very fiddly while the Tamiya kits just go together wonderfully well. The colors look good to me.
