Tamiya acrylics - safe to ship?

As I was getting another box ready for the troops overseas, I paused to actually read the label on a bottle of Tamiya acrylic paint … and was shocked and dismayed to see it is considered flammable, among other things.

Ummmmm, what the heck??? I thought acrylics were all water based, and therefore safe to ship by air to our men and women over in one of those hellholes, I mean, exotic overseas postings. I don’t want to get pounded with baseball bats by the postal nazis, but Tamiya acrylics are about the only acrylics my hobby shop stocks.

When I moved to Canada from NY and was in the process of packing and shipping my hobby stuff, they were among the items I knew I’d probably have to leave behind as I didn’t want to jeopardize my permanent residence application (it was the first time I’d noticed that little ‘flammable’ label on their jars), so I was doing everything by the book. Once I arrived here, I was able to order them locally and have replacements sent to me via Canada Post with no problem. I’m assuming it has something to do with border and customs restrictions as well as how they are shipped, as I also believe that flammables can only be sent via ground shipping. This I know also applies to both the USPS and UPS. The only paints from my stash that I shipped were my MM Acryls and Jo Sonja acrylics.

Well, I haven’t had a box returned yet, so I went ahead and sent them out. I figured what the heck, maybe the Post Office will cut a little slack since it’s for the troops.

I don’t think there’s a problem sending them. I’ve ordered some from sites not in America and they’ve arrived in one piece. Thanks for helping our troops.
