Tamiya 1/72 Ki-61 Hien

Can’t say enough good things about this kit, it was an absolute dream to build and even Tamiya’s decals behaved themselves lol. Perfect little project to decompress with if your last build was giving you hassles.

The camo pattern decals were a delightful surprise; they went on shockingly well and barely took any Microsol to sink into the surface. Why can’t all Tamiya decals behave like these??

The wire is a little thick; I need more practice stretching the sprue out over a fire without snapping, melting or burning anything lol.

Great job on this Hien Carl. Was your camo mottling done freehand?

Very nicely done. I’ve been looking at their 1/48 kit - and yes the version with the camo decals is very tempting!!! Great job on a beautiful airplane.

For the antenna I’ve recently tried EZ Line - still learning…

Oh no that’s all decals lol, if I tried doing that freehand I’d probably still be painting it now

Came out very nice! I have the 1/48 kit without the camo decals not looking forward to when painting time comes.

Wow! I wasn’t aware that there were decals for this type of camouflage scheme.

Wow, never seen Camo Decals. looks great!
I definitely need to check it out. on my Stuart Tank I couldn’t get them to lay down. I was using Tamiya Mark Fit, tried to heat them with a hair dryer, nothing worked. I can’t recall ever having a problem on a simple item. Does Mark Fit go bad maybe?

I love the look of the Hien, but curiously I have never built one. I do have two Tony’s in my stash, the Hasegawa (48th) that I have had for a long time, and Tamiya’s 48th scale kit that I added to the stash a couple of years ago. I plan to build both simultaneously. I don’t have the Tamiya camo decals, so I will be painting all of that, times two.
