I think I have some extra roundels. I’ll check and if you can get that off I’ll be happy to send 'em to ya.
Marc-
thanks for the offer! I have to admit though, I’m afraid to try and take them off again. The ones on there are set #4 and think I might stick with them. (sorry about the pun! [V])
Frank the only time I had similar problem with decals on an Fw 190 D-9, I very lightly and very carefully sanded the offending bumps and lumps and then touched up the areas by hand. All in all it didn’t turn out too bad.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Darren-
Very nice ‘190! I’m hoping a lil’ extra wear around the gun panels will help hide the bad decals.
Well, against my better judgement I tried to use the squadron codes from the bad decal sheet since I had already started putting those on. The first one started acting up so I quickly removed it before it ruined the plane. I decided to use the markings from an old Monogram sheet, specifically Doulas Bader’s ship. I had already painted and weathered the spinner and prop, but the spinner was painted black and Bader’s plane had a sky spinner. The painted prop blades were already glued into it, so had to steal new blades and spinner from another Spit to paint them the right colors. I don’t think the fuse stripe is the correct color for his aircraft, but it was already on and I couldn’t stand the thought of trying to remove it. Last night I put a coat of Future on it, and it is starting to look better. I don’t think it is turning out to be my best build, but I really wanted a BOB Spit on my shelf.
Looks just great to me, nice recovery on the decals [tup]
Unless you actually told someone what had happened I don’t think they would even notice.
Cheers
Good plan. All that bad stuff I said, I just made it all up. [;)]
Unless you actually told someone what had happened, I don’t think they would even notice.
And so it goes with all this stuff. We work feverishly to provide the “Nth degree” of detail, nay perfection, and ultimately only God knows it - and if He’s impressed, he aint talking. I suppose that’s good, in and of itself, but the mortals who view our work usually comment with something like:
“Oh, that’s nice…,” or “You spent HOW MUCH time on that thing?!”
Such reactions are brought on by the fact that, usually, they are only allowed to view our efforts from afar - since they arent allowed to touch it for fear of something breaking off!
Hardly seems worth the effort, in the end, so I have developed a move away from such strident construction efforts. I do a clean assembly job, a few details here and there and a pristine paint job. Call it “OOB+,” if you like. With my schedule, even this takes months to complete but one project, so that’ll do. Maybe as you age, you really do gain a little wisdom, after all.
Work on the Spitfire really slowed down this last week, due to it being VERY busy at work last week with Valentine’s Day and all. Although it’s hard to see in the photos, I put on a wash to highlight the panel lines, finished up the landing gear, and glued the tail pieces on. But, work is slowly progressing and will hopefully be done soon as I have two GBs starting up soon! Here is where she’s at:
Looks real nice. You’re making excellent progress on it. The camo is really well done and the wash looks great…not too overpowering, but enough to highlight the panel lines. I’m looking forward very much to seeing the finished piece.
…and Valentine’s Day slowed my modeling progress a bit too, but it was worth it! [swg]
Thanks Mike! Next up, exhaust stains and a flat coat. Then, a few scrapes and chips and attaching all of the fiddly bits. Hopefully done in a week or two. [party]
Frank things are looking great, I really like the weathering you’ve done on the undercarriage etc, it is very nicely done.
Also, now that the Spit is all painted up the lightened shade of paint on the flaps and tail really looks good.
Cheers
Darren-
Thanks for the compliment, I can hardly wait to see her finished!
Looking GOOD !
Bud
That is going to be a beautiful Spitfire! Very nice job on the paint, the wash- all of it!
The struts, gear dorrs, etc., are especially impressive. What do you use for the wash?
Again- excellent work!
Frank,
your Spitfire looks superb! As one of this forums Spitfire addicts, I can assure you that this one is looking good.[tup]
Looking forward to seeing more of this one.[;)]
Thanks Darren! Too bad I didn’t know about the FAA GB before I painted it, maybe I could’ve built it for that too! [8D]
No question… I have to agree with everyoine else… good lookin’ Spit.
I saw your post about painting various control surfaces a slightly different color to look like a replacement or repair. Another nice touch is to lighten your colors to look faded on cloth covered control surfaces. They weather faster and almost always look lighter. Be careful, not all control surfaces were cloth and trim tabs were metal so they would not be as faded as the cloth surfaces.
Stiff upper lip my friend, she looks spot-on from here!
