Nice work on the pit. Keep us posted.

Very nice work so far. What did you use for the seat belts?
Darwin, O.F. [alien]
Very nicely done, Jason. I’ve got high expectations now! Keep the WIP pics coming.
[#ditto]
Looking sharp fella.
…Guy
Yeah, but could you add a little detail?
…HAAAAA! [:o)]
Crimany sakes! Super neat-o!
thanks for the support guys.
as i was working on the wings i managed to break off one
of the gun barrels and lost it to the carpet monster.
so i decided to replace all the barrels with some aluminum
tubing.
here’s how it went…
this was the first time i had tried my hand at this.

Hey Jay,
Mighty fine job there my friend…!!! I like how the barrels turned out!! Keep us posted.

just a little update.
finished painting the main airframe tonight.
masking took longer than the actual painting…lol.
hope you like.
jason.
Excellent work there Jason! Looks like your masking job was first rate, no blemishes that I can see. What paints did you use?
hi daywalker,
i used model master raf enamels.
raf medium sea gray on the bottom.
raf ocean gray for top base coat.
raf dark green for the camo.
thanks.
jason.
Perfect edges on the camoflage. (imo)
…so you attach the stabilizer after the fuselage is painted? Once it’s attached, do you just touch up the seam or junction? It does appear easier.
I’ve always painstakingly masked off a completed model, including attached propellors and landing gear… everything!
Sometimes propellors are integral with the propellor shaft. Is there an easy method to have those types of assemblies done after the main painting and still have a spinning propellor?
Nice build !
What markings will you use ??
Hey Jason,
She is really turning out nice…!!! There is something about a Stang in RAF colours…!! Looking forward to seeing her done…
Laughs, I know exactly what you mean about the masking job…!!

Trexx,
Ive used the tubing-in-a-tube trick for props, since I first saw it done by Bob Steinbrunn. Simply, you glue a large tube “bushing” in the nose and a smaller one in the propeller hub - and the one slides into the other after painting is complete. Heres what I mean:
Heres my P-40 with a sprue handle attached:
When I am done with painting and handling, I will cut the sprue handle off with a razor saw. Then I’ll center drill a hole in the nose, perfectly fit for one of two pieces of tubing. In this case, I’m using the larger of two electrical connector pins, like this:
The pic is fuzzy, but you can see the prop already has the smaller tube in place. Once the nose hole is drilled, the larger connector pin will be inserted clear up to the insulation and glued in with CA. I will cut it off at the insulation, leaving the “bushing” for the smaller tube to slide into.
It takes longer to tell it than it does to do it. Brass tubing can be used, too, but that is a harder alloy than these connectors, which are plated copper. Besides, I have them by the box full and find the insulating plastic sleeve a centering aid prior to gluing. I like this because it lets the prop spin, which helps prevent broken prop blades. Plus, if you use the wifes hairdyer on cold air setting - the prop spins nicely in the breeze!
Hmmm…
Thanks for the answer.
I think I understand.
So, what you’re saying is, the propellor is not secured within the interior of the model?
(ie; if you put your model into a nose dive does the propellor fall to the floor?
That won’t do, for me. They’ve got to spin and stay put too no matter how they’re oriented on my models.
Spinning props are COOL!
Death to the Ethiopians! The vaunted dominator of the grass hut people… (LOL)
They’re spinning so you won’t notice the mismatched canopy frame color. HA!
hey all,
just wanted to post some more progress
on the mustang mkIII.
started decaling this weekend.
i’m using aeromaster decals, the kit decals were too brittle and cracked
when i tried to position them on the model.
here is a pic.
