Southern California AMPS has had a tradition of a yearly “4 Hour Build” at our monthly meetings for the past few years. It was normally done where we meet, where you bring a kit and all the supplies and materials needed to complete a kit in four hours. Kit choice is obviously critical. As is the color scheme. I had never done one previously because these were usually held on the meetings I could not attend due to work schedule. This year because of the COVID situation, it was done online via Zoom meeting, so we all had our own full benches with all of our materials. Gentlemen, start your engines…
So for my kit choice, I selected the Africa Luftwaffe boxing of Tamiya 1/48 Kübelwagen. Which turned out to be an almost ideal choice. Single color paint scheme, easy assembly, well engineered. The only drawback? A few teeny tiny parts, which thankfully did not get lost
So anyways, I did not do any in progress photos during the build. As it was, I completed this with basic painting and decals in about 3 hours and 40 minutes… no washes or weathering… I will actually add that this week, just because I want the model to have that. I also did not build or paint the two kit figures… yet… but I will!
So this is what I was able to do in four hours… actually 3:40…
I have not built, painted, and applied decals to a model in an afternoon in probably over 40 years. The sand yellow is Gunze, Khaki seats and headlight covers Vallejo, roof canvas Testors Acryl, and tires are Mission Models.
Not my best work, but hey, it was done in under the four hour timeline…

Right?! Normally in four hours I’ll get a step or two done and maybe an airbrush session with one color…
That’s my speed, about 4 hour session to get one or maybe two steps done depending on the model detail. I like starting early in the morning, but if I need to paint I wait until my wife is up because my air compressor makes so much noise.
sometimes I do a session in the evening when my wife is on the computer. She likes playing computer games and I would rather work on a model. But soon summer will be here and it will be much harder to stay indoors.

These guys that came with the kit were not part of the Online 4 Hour Build challenge, but they are part of the follow up… they are beautifully molded and the poses are so natural once assembled…
Okay, so 4 hours? I haven’t done that in a long old time. I get too sucked in these days. Even a “slap it together” takes me days!
So here I’m sitting, thinking to myself not bad, Carlos, and then I see those figures.
Wait! What?! This is 1/48 (scrolls to top) oh, WTH.
Now I’m seeing this little build a whole lot differently. I think I want one lol. Those figures are really amazing for this scale! I can’t wait to see you paint these!!!

If I run across one, I will! But for now you got me inspired to pull out a 1/48 Tamiya Matilda. Now this is building bliss! It’s going together like a dream and I’m only a couple hours into the hull with these link and length tracks.

Wow - 4 hours… that is quite the challenge. Nice work Stik finishing in that time frame. It does remind me of my 10 year old self cobbling something together in 4 hours. We have better glue today so I supose it’s a bit easier.
Mike, if Tamiya had come out with their 1/48 armor line in the late 80s when I decided to standardize my scales, I would have jumped right in and never looked back. Those kits are gorgeous. I bet you are in bliss with the Matilda.
John, thank you. It really was a fun challenge to build something in that timeframe. Just like being a school kid, only a few hours after school on a rainy day before dinner. And yes we do have better glues now. Fun Times once upon a time…

I took the above shots yesterday, then today posed it on my little desert base
