After getting back into the hobby about two years ago, this is the second kit I have managed to complete and the first one I am willing to show anyone As long at it took me to complete this kit, only God knows why I have 50+ more underneath my bench (lots of great sales - LOL).
It is pretty much OOB except for an aluminum barrel and the Tamiya grill PE. I used some pastels on the wheels, skirts and fenders to simulate dust; the photos make it look much redder than it actually is. I am thinking about using it in a diorama. Anyhow, I would appreciate feedback from anyone on how I can improve upon my next kit.
Nice job overall. You can really improve these Panthers with some AM goodies, to get that extra detailing that makes a more realistic build, if that is what you are after. I don’t know why, but Tamiya doesn’t see fit to provide commanders vision blocks, you can make your own…beats having the empty voids in the cupola. The tow cables look a little weird, too straight, and would interfere with the traverse of the turret I guess. I would try one of the new Dragon releases next, they are a gas and come with extras, PE etc. that really add to the realism.
I would explore some weathering techniques and the details make the model when it comes to German armor.
Great build and camo job. If it was mine, I’d be applying a dark wash and some extensive weathering now to make it look less like a model and more like a representation of the real thing if you know what i mean.
Thats a personal taste thing though. Either way its looking good.
Jazza, I just used a paintbrush and added the pattern by hand. I tried an airbrush technique I had read about at first, but it did not turn out well. Doing it by hand was quicker and looked much nicer.
Thanks all for looking and providing your comments/tips.
Steve, I agree that the tow cables do not look right. I thought the same thing when I put them on. I am going to replace them. I also never thought about the vision blocks - that would have been an easy addition and improved the look of the cupola.
Both you and Heinz make good points about weathering. I tried a bit based upon some techniques I read about but the result was disappointing. For some reason, I am a bit thick-headed when it comes to applying some of the techniques I read about, especially when it comes to weathering. I am sure the next kit will be even better!
I keep trying to get my folks to buy me stuff like this too.
They keep reminding me that I’m 36 and make more than they do.
Ah well.
Here’s a question from a Panther-illiterate guy: The G is the later version, yes? So my Verlinden Panther G engine compartment won’t be right for my Dragon early Jagdpanther?
