Since Takom basically provides no information, can anyone tell me what color the running gear and tracks are? They look black or dark gray, but I can’t find anything specific. Also, is it safe to assume the rest of the model is just basic white? Thanks in advance!
Photos seem to show running gear as pretty much black. Not sure about ‘regular service’ Weasels - where white winter camouflage would likely be a thing - but the ones used in the Navy’s Antarctic expeditions were usually ‘arctic orange,’ a more reddish shade than the ‘dayglo’ tones used these days.
The US Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis (Va., now Joint Base Langley-Eustis) has a late M29 in that arctic exploration orange, good color photos here:
Although white can’t be ruled out I would say orange was the go to colour. They would not want them camouflaged but quite the reverse in high visibility colours.
Running gear would seem to be black. I would do the rubber tires a dark grey to differentiate the wheel from the rubber.

And of course this one has orange wheels!
I don’t see why a Weasel couldn’t be all white. When I did a Google image search for “M29 arctic Weasel”, I did manage to find a few pics (but not many) of all white Weasels, or even some with white and dark green/gray camouflage.
As for the tracks and running gear, will the below pic help?
Trivia note: The M29 Weasel was invented by British inventor Geoffrey Pyke. The same guy who had the crazy (but plausible) idea to build an aircraft carrier out of ice known as Project Habakkuk.
The tracks will be a rubber black, as essentially they are a giant rubber band, with some steel parts added in here and there.
Thanks everyone! The Takom kit is a white version of the Weasel, so I’m sticking with that, but I like the orange.
Oh I didn’t mean to imply that they couldn’t just that all white would be the rare exception not the rule.
Even the sample you showed is half orange
Not sure why Takom went with a white scheme for an Artic/Antarctic version since they all seem to be orange in every picture.
Yes there are loads of other camo schemes for them in military service but they are almost exclusively soft top versions not full cabin expedition versions.
Of course anybody can paint it whatever they wish and white would indeed look cool once weathered up.
Your picture of the track is great! Would not have guessed that the rubber was only on the outer side of the road wheels and the track it self was solid rubber with steel cleats bolted on.
