T-62 close up and personal

I had the opportunity in 1976 to attend a course at Wildflicken Germany familiarizing us TC’s with the then preferred weapon of our enemy, the T-62. This one was captured by the Israelis and graciously loaned to us so we could see how she worked and what the vulnerabilities were. ( I wish I still looked like that!) ha!!!

A nice close in shot of a serviceable T-62 that is unaltered from it’s field ready condition.

Nice Steve! I’m sure there is lots of differences but the only obvious diff I see from the T-55 is the spacing between the 1st and 2nd road wheel. Did you all get to drive it? Thanks for the picture.

Yes we did get to drive ,shoot ,move ,and communicate. The differences between the T-55 are many, mainly the 115mm main gun. Still a tank that I wouldn’t want to crew. Buttoned up for a guy 6’2" like me there just wasn’t any room. The smoothbore 115mm was about as inaccurate as it could be. We only got to fire a few rounds due to the ammo not being plentiful. I think the IDF supplied about a thousand rounds for the school. They weren’t concerned as this tank was destined to be converted to a 105mm main gun as soon as it got back to Israel.

Wow, another great pic. Thanks again

Excellent reference pic. Wonder where that tank is now. Thanks.

Yeah, great ref pic, thank you. I stored it for future reference. I’ll need to build a T 62 sometime. My collection has a serious lack of soviet subject matter.

You’ve got a great archive of armour pictures Steve. Thanks for taking the time to dig afew out and share them with us. Semper Fi, mike

i had a toy one of those when i was a kid. wired remote control, motor in the control with the tank steered by a cable leading through a tube like a speedometer cable, and the gun worked but you had to pull back a lever manually to cock it and trigger it by hand directly.

Sounds like the real thing,HA!
