T-34/76 Tread color

This may have been asked and answered already; if so please forgive me but I didn’t find it… This was posted in the wrong area originally; hope to get more info here.

I’m building a T-34/76 and am trying to determine the best colour combo for the treads. They came in a graphite black shade which looks cool but not sure if it’s correct. As this is my first Soviet tank build I’m woefully stupid on the subject Any help would be much appreciated!

Hmm, I would paint and weather them like any other steel tracks. Everyone has their own technique and colors but I usually start off by priming with a flat black then giving them a not so heavy coat of dark brown. From there I usually follow it up with a heavy oil wash using raw umber and then some dry-brushing. I haven’t done anything Soviet yet but I would imagine from the looks of them, the T34 tracks were regular steel like the German tanks.

Thanks for the input; I just finished an M4A3 and loved the look of the T 48 tread but knew there was obviously going to be quite a difference for the Russian junk. I’ll probably do as you suggested and top it off with some mig pigments.

Mike: I prefer to base-coat my metal (non-rubber block) tracks in MM “Schokoladen-braun,” then drybrush with Humrol (Metalcote) steel and follow with a PolyScale “Dirt” or “Mud” wash.

Great ideas everyone. I suspect I’ll follow the tips as long as I feel comfortable with them. I look at as a learning curve and am not too concerned about messing it up. From past experience I usually find stuff that works really well and others not so much All the input has been appreciated. Cheers!
