I am in the process of building the monogram trojan and
i wonder out there if anyone has used any after market stuff
to detail up this beastie. i have the black box update and minor
conversion (T-28D), and i am in the process of fitting in the
KMC curtis 1820 engine. It is an old kit by the looks and a little
basic in some areas, but it will look the piece when done. Has
any one gone to town on these out there ???
Jose,
I guess the biggest help in your construction, would be Reference Photo’s. I’ve built two or three examples of the Monogram T-28, to include the massive modification required to convert the B/D Model into the A Model (high canopy/small cowling/different exhaust ports). During the time these projects were done, the modifications were all scratchbuilt from my spares box, because aftermarket sets weren’t available then.
There are a few area’s on the Monogram Model that come to mind:
(1) If going to build it with the canopy open, you’ll have to cut the forward transparency and canopy frame from the fuselage.
(2) The dorsal fin needs to be built up just a small amount.
(3) The front gear door needs to be 3 Piece, instead of one.
(4) The main gear outboard doors are two piece instead of one… (lower section is overlapped by upper section)
(5) The main gear tires should be thicker. (the nose wheel on X-Navy aircraft were thin, flat contact surface, solid rubber tires, so the kit supplid nose tire works fine)
Also, if you’re going to apply the Arrestor Hook, like’s on the “D” Model, you’ll have to cut and refinish the section of fuselage underneath the vertical stabilizer.
Remember… reference photos, reference photos, reference photos.

thanks frank for your assistance, do you know if the carburettor
inlets were around the engine as on other 1820 equipped aircraft
or the scoop on the top of the cowl and off to the side did this function
and is one of these scoops for the oil cooler. I got me the black box
interior kit for the upgrade to the navy T-28C / D and it has a lot of bits
in it to complete the conversion.
Cheers

The scoop on the top of the Cowling of a “C” Model is the Carburator Air Intake, and the scoop on the lower right (if standing in front of the airplane) is the Oil Cooler Intake… this intake does not extend all the way to the cowling rim, only the “A” Models had intakes like that.
See the picture below of the U.S. Army T-28B #7747 “Ellie II”, flying formation with her replacement, a PC-9, over the countryside south of Ft. Bragg, NC.
