What should I do if I suspect a user is actually an AI-bot. Anything? Nothing?
At first I thought the user was just writing carefully worded replies. Then I thought the user was copy/pasting replies from ChatGPT. Now, based on a private message from the user, I’m wondering if it’s just a bot.
That is a good question. How does one determine if a person is in fact an AI bot? And what is its motivation/goal? Why do the people behind these bots do this?
Oh I don’t know Baron, I don’t think bank robbers do it for fun or “just because”. People who unleash bots seem to like creating chaos and messing with people. They are just jerks who can’t think of anything better to do with their intellect.
If it’s none threatening, then just play around with it. I do this on FB and IG. I’ll reply with details about how we used to play D&D everyday and if they remember Ral Partha. A real person would just say something simple like, “We’ve never met”. If the reply goes off of some specific word you used and goes off topic from your reply, then that’s Aye-Eye.
If however the messages are threatening or “phishy” then report as @Kendra_Bell suggests.
Some do. They like the thrill. Others do it for the reasons you give, too.
My point is that it doesn’t really matter why. What’s more important, specifically in this case, is to report the bot/user to the admins.
I disagree with those who say to engage with him. There’s no need to confirm any more info or expose your account or the forum through interaction. Just report the post and avoid any contact with the poster.
