surface primer

Hello,

I´m going to use Tamiya´s Liquid Surface Primer for the first time, should I thin it or is it right to airbrush it right from the bottle?

Thanks,

Peipus.

Tamiya’s Liquid Surface Primer is very similar to the finer grades of Mr Surfacer. I haven’t tried airbrushing it, though I do use it as a spot filler.

I would recommend thinning it for airbrushing. Remember that it’s a lacquer based product, so don’t use regular enamel thinners, it won’t work.

If you haven’t read Swanny’s summary about Mr Surfacer, I’d suggest having a look - in my experience, all points are applicable to Tamiya’s Liquid Surface Primer. I’d also suggest that when you get to actually spraying it, do a few test shots on some scrap first, to see how it flows and how it lays down on the subject. Also, do a forum search on “airbrushing mr surfacer”. This will turn up some other members’ previous experiences with it. General opinion seems to suggest Mr Surfacer needs about 30% thinner to airbrush cleanly, so I would imagine that would be applicable to the Tamiya product.

Good luck

Phil, thanks for the info and the link, that was some good reading.
