Supermodel 1/72 CANT Z-506 B WIP (incl pics) UPDATE 24-7-12

Next on the bench is this Supermodel 1/48 CANT Z-506B. I got it as a gift from a couple of friends. Not really my cup of tea but if I screw up I will not loose any tears about it.

Since the cockpit is low on detail I chose to use the pilot models. They where identical so I modified the head of one and gave the other one a moustache, just to break the monotomy.

It turnes out that the fuselage was warped. I will have to fix this with some hot water.

Overall it is a mediocre kit, really showing its age. Details a sparse, soft and/or heavy handed. The transparent pieces are not very clear, the molds really should have been polished. And the fit is not so good. The whole fuselage seam is going to need putty.

Interesting kit…can’t say I have ever seen one before.

What beautyfull plane you started

Thanks for the replies. @bsyamato: coming from an Italian I can underdtand why you would call it pretty. To me it looks like a pregnant cow on floats.

LOL i changed point of view about planes design

Absolutely cool to see you building this. I have the Supermodel Cant z 1007.bis I got off ebay a couple of years ago. The reason I bought it was because I built this kit back when I was in High School some 30+ yrs ago. It was the very first kit I airbrushed using my then new Binks Wren single action (still have that airbrush). So, in short, it was a nostalgic model for me and I do look forward to building it again even though it is old and flawed. I personally like the looks of it. Looking forward to following along as I like what you have done so far.

Joe

I have supermodel’s S.M. 81 Pipistrello, and I am looking forward to picking up a S.M. 76 and a CANT Z.1007 bis as well, just something about those big Italian Bombers i guess…[;)]

Anyway, these older kits are far more affordable than newer stuff, and also allow you to clean out the spare box. (I should know, mine are stuffed full of bits!) [:D]

Thanks for all the kind comments. It may sound like I am bashing this old supermodel kit but I knew what I was getting into. And it is the only kit of this aircraft…
Because of the cluncky guns I am going to buld this as an unarmed sea rescue version, all white with german markings.

Here are some more progress pics. I saw several questions regarding canopy masking this week, so here is how I do it: Kip (or Tamiya) tape cut into in thin strips, working from the outside to the inside:

The exhaust where shallow so I drilled and thinned them out:

step 1: drilling

step 2: thinning

step 3: smoothing/sanding

Current state: the wins and canopy are on:

The add a bit more interest the control surfaces are not straight. This is one advantage of older kits, moveable control surfaces.

And a pic of the belly. For a split second I though about making it into a “what if” canard/pusher aircraft, it would look prettier then the real CANT Z 506…

All the grey stuff is putty, it is going to need some.

I like that model a lot. Guy (Lufty) did the crosses one and it looks great.

If you want to build the SM.81 it’s worth looking for the Italeri repop that came out recently. It has new fuselage halves with nice fabric detail, otherwise the same old Supermodel kit.
