Super constellation aluminium bottom or not?

I have a question regarding the underside of a Lockheed super constellation.

I really want to build the Airfix Lockheed super constellation 1/72 with an aluminium underside/bottom.

This kit includes decals for 3 versions,

one of them being the Quantas version which I’m going to build.

Like I said I want to do the underside in Alclad aluminium but I don’t know if this is historically accurate. So can someone tell if an aluminium underside is historically accurate or not?

I guess the bottom is aluminium.

You might note that your top photo is of a ‘restored’ aircraft; if you do an image search for ‘Qantas super constellation,’ many of the resulting period images clearly show plain aluminum undersides, some with areas of grey at the nose or so forth.

Best to find original photos that match the particular markings fit you’re going for, and go from there.

I would agree with Greg…finding and studying photos of the original aircraft is always best, particularly if you can find ones of the specific airplane you intend to build. The Alclad Aluminum Airframe seems to be the nearest shade and wear for duplicating the old prop liners; the chrome may be a bit bright. Though I have no personal experience with aluminum foil, it also may be a good choice, if you can find some good instruction on its use. All the best as you build the Connie…she’s a fine old bird, and 1/72 scale will present some interesting challenges that certainly will not be unsurmountable. Looking forward to seeing her when she’s complete.
