Sunderland Flying Boat

Hey, Newcomer, Just bought a Airfix Sunderland Flying Boat, anyone done this kit, any advice pictures finished models would be good to look at.

Anyone know were to fine any reference photos, kit looks pretty basic

Regards

Andy

Basic it most certainly is, but it is an old kit. White Ensign Models in the UK do some photo etched sets for the Sunderland. There is one for the cockpit and one for the bomb bay. They may also do something for the floats, but I can’t remember 100% for sure.

The arifix kit is very basic and has some issues but nothing out of the ordinary for an older reissued airfix kit. The WEM photo etch is very nice but was too pricey for me. Here are some photos of mine

I added all the aerials, I also added some bulkheads inside so that you can’t see all the side windows when looking into the cockpit. I couldn’t find much info on the Sunderland on the web but I can send you what I have. Maybe someone else knows of some good books.

Not only is it awesome up close, but when you see it fly too.

I have one in my stash that i plan on superdetailing at some point [:-^]. I generally search for as much info as i can find, in doing so i came across this book, http://www.ianallanpublishing.com/product.php?productid=61343&cat=1316&bestseller=Y

It has everything you will ever need to know about Superdetailing the Airfix 1/72, Sunderland. I bought it and would recommend to anyone with your project in mind.

P.s. Dave thats a stunner for sure.

Hey Fellas,

Thanks very much for your advice, will certainly buy the book, and at least the cockpit pe kit from the supplier mentioned, (white ensign was it).

I think the pictures of the model are fantastic, good effort, hope mine comes out somewhere near that and I will be delighted.

I checked out the links, and if anyone else is interested, there is some good stuff on youtube. Also suprised to see lots of modelling tips and hints on there.

Good luck in modelling.

Andy
