I am in the process of building another Tamiya 1/48 P-51 Mustang with the Ultracast nose and propeller. The object is to portray this sucker in flight with a contained power unit/switch and discreetly replacable power supply. I’m open to any suggestions on how to go about accomplishing this. Thanks!
go to www.pagermotors.com they have 2 different sizes of small electric motors and also sell button cell batteries with the holding clip. i’ve ordered from them several times and have had no problems at all. i bought a few motors from them and powered up my pair of 1/72 scale academy OV-10’s
i retract the statement on the batteries, i just checked the site and they don’t carry batteries with the holders anymore. although with button cells you could make one pretty easily.
Welcome to the forum Cosmo. Take a look at this site. I have 2 of these waiting, impatiently I might add, for future projects.
Since it is 1/48 then a mabuci can motor is in order. You can pick-up battery holders at Radio shack. |

Check aircraft article archive on Finescale site for Motorizing a Spitfire (Jan '03) - download PDF free. It’s 1/72 but to your point, battery is enclosed in fuselage so you might get ideas. At 1/48 prop weight is not 50% heavier than 1/72, but over 3 times heavier (LxWxH all scale up) so choose motor accordingly. I doubt Touchdash with integral switch if that’s the one you’re talking about will fit a Mustang - Merlin; Tamiya 1/48 prop-action a/c that use Touchdash have ‘fat’ radial fronts (Corsair, Thunderbolt, etc). But you can find Touchdash occasionally on that large auction site, your LHS since used on their push-start race cars, or direct from Tamiya per instruction sheet for any prop action kit that uses it.
wing_nut, where can i get one of these, and for how much? i would love to drop this setup into my mustang i’m building for a GB
The only place I know of to get them is directly from DSM at the link in my other post. Back then it was $40.
Here is a link to mine to see how it looks and another to see how I intsalled it. At this setting it starts and runs up then shuts down. In a few seconds it does it again but will continue to run until you turn it off.
