Are there any particular modeling mags that y’all subscribe to or buy? reason I ask is, I recently purchased a grab bag of mags from Squadron of old Military Modeling and Armor magazines, and not too long ago, I bought a recent Tamiya Modeling Magazine as well. Does anyone buy any of these? I really am impressed with the Armor and Tamiya, but I am not sure if I can cough up that kind of dough for the subscription price, yet at the same time, seems that I have no local hobby shop that carry them.
What is everyone’s thoughts on these and anything else I might have missed?
The grab bag is a way retailers eleviate themselves of an abundance of back issues that never sold.
For some folks, access to a resource to browse and purchase their favorite modeling magazines isn’t available, so subscribing is the only option if they want to acquire it. Ordering from online retailers can get pricey if that is the only item you are shopping for.
As to what magazine to subscribe or purchase…well if a magazine has a specific article and resources I’m interested in I’ll get it. I prefer content drive magazines, not those with 80% adverts and 20% content. Modelers are a frugal lot and prefer substance…more bang for their buck.
The Tamiya Magazine is a good magazine…my products have appeared there on occassion. They do a great job of promoting the entire industry, not just their products.
I used to buy the Tamiya Model magazine, and their sister publication on Armor monthly. My LHS stocked them at prices that were far below the cost of their own subscription (which I find ludicrously expensive). The quality of models shown in those mags never disappointed.
The only model magazine I subscribe to regularly and faithfully is Finescale Modeler. And Playboy. [:-^]
I also really liked “Armor”, but I’ll peruse that first before buying it first. Tamiya modeling mag is decent, but sometimes they have stuff I’m not relaly interested in.
Since this topic is about Mags i would like to say something about FSM. I used to subscribe for years, then i had a change in lifestyle, where i now do the grocery shopping. My only enjoyment about this chore is to scope out the magazine rack for a new FSM mag. And when its there it makes that chore that much better.
My delima is that on this website there is special access to things that are privy to subscribtion holders only, so a guy like me who buys all the issues off the stand (even tho it cost me more i know) gets no access to this stuff. I sent an e-mail to the staff of FSM asking them if maybe they could include a code in there mag that would grant buyers like me access to the website specials.
Sadly i got no response from them, oh well i tried.
Right now I subscribe to FSM - it’s a good general magazine, AMPS Boresight and Military Vehicles. As part of my model RR interests I also subscribe to Model Railroader and the UP Historical Society Streamliner. I try to get Military Modeling whenever there is a good article on US armor or something good from Steve Zaloga, otherwise I don’t care to subscribe - too much stuff on the Napoleonic era, Romans, etc (good stuff, just not my area of interest). I often pick up a copy of Military in Scale or Tamiya’s Military Models International when they have some US armor/artillery or something on WW2 armor that catches my fancy. I admit my tastes are narrow so I don’t subscribe to many hobby magazines any more.
I’m like doog, the only magazine I have a regular subscription for is FSM. Magazines aren’t really my thing for reference material and such as I look more on the Internet and forums for that type of information and inspiration but every now and then I will pick up a copy at the LHS when I’m in there buying supplies and something catches my eye.
I buy all magazines from the local newsagent rather than subscription. I used to subscribe to FSM but found there were too many issues that held little interest for me so the savings by subscribing were illusory.
I flick through any new mags on the stand and if something gets my attention i’ll buy it.
I find the magazine i buy most often is Military in Scale (British mag), followed by Military Modelling and FSM.
I currently only subscribe to Fine Scale Modeler and Popular Science. Sorta wish I subscribed to more modeling magazines, but the prices are usually high.
Anyone out there subscribe to Model Selection?[?] It’s like a magazine but real swanky, it’s called a visual quarterly modelling guide. And the subscription price is a mind-blowing $70.00 for 4 issues!! It’s published in France, written in English. I don’t subscribe to it, I only have one issue I picked up somwhere on sale and that’s how I learned this particular magazine even exists.
Well FSM and Boresight to start. This year I tried Military Modelling. It’s OK but I most times as stated, too many articles that don’t interest me. I won’t renew that one.
Had my subscription to Field Artillery Journal for 30 years until the stopped publishing in 2005. The merged with the Air Defense mag, [yuck]
I got my renewal for FSM, but I’m just not sure I will renew. Most of the info I can get on the internet, especially reviews up the yahoo. I do pick up an occasional MMIR, Military in Scale, and Military Modeler Intl. There are many more cool ones, but they have to have a topic or two worth plunking down the $9-10 on.
I get the latest issue of FSM, and then occasionally I’ll pick up back issues of some of the imported mags which are normally like 20 bucks or more. Stuff from England, Spain, and Japan. Buy it for about the same price as any other mag. That’s about it. I also belong to this forum, armorama, and a few others. This and Armorama are the two I pay attention to most often. Especially this one.
