oh i see… the history channel said it was shot down with cannons. [:I] oops.
I saw the show on the Falklands I think on Wings way back when… some ungodly number (when you think of the odds and design differences) of Mirage’s and other types shot down to 1 Harrier that had engine failure… not a bad score!
Soooo, Did you guys enjoy the Airshow Video ? [:D]
Regards, Rick
All I’m trying to say is that a pilot that knows how to keep his speed up and utilize its strengths will probably be using missiles and retrograding before ever using his cannons. Cannon kills are few and far between compared to missle kills. If I were fighting air-to-air, you can bet that I’d never attempt dogfighting with an Su-35 while piloting a F-22.
Sorry to open a can of worms, it was just a point I felt had to be made. I will admit to not knowing squat about modern avionics and missle systems (Sparrow, HARM? WTF?) so in a long-range engagement, I have no idea on who has superiority. [;)]
i’d go with the fa-22 on long range. Although the su-27’s are supposed to be able to engage at over 100 miles, I believe US avionics have always been better. Rick is right though. Great airshow video, eh?
airshow video??? [%-)]

Don’t Russian planes still use vacuum tubes to protect against EMP?
i did! cant you buy flights in those??
I only know of several cannon kills made by the Israelis over the Bekaa Valley during the turkey shoots in 1983. Those I think were the most recent cannon kills. Still, I’d love to hear details of more recent ones if I am wrong.
Love the video!
BVR capability is all well and good, but it’s almost useless real-world. Every conflict we’ve been involved in, since the invention of BVR missiles, has had ROE’s requiring positive visual identification before you could engage a bogey (well… then a bandit). So while long range missile capability is great and all… if he evades that first shot and knows what he’s doing, you’re in a knife fight - meaning guns or maybe a sidewinder shot.
F-16s scored MiG-29 kills over Iraq (enforcing the no-fly zone in the decade before the war) and Bosnia (crowded airspace with all those UN and NATO flights) with AMRAAMs and those are BVR missiles.
Maybe a peacetime situation (Gulf of Sidra) might dictate a close in fight, but in airspace being openly contested, with AWACS support I’m sure the ROE will be changed for the aircraft to best utilize their systems
Great Video
Yup, I agree. Pretty amazing huh?
I personally would like to have seen an upgraded F-14, maybe an “E” or “F” version, with vectored thrust, canards, better radar and avionics…
As to the tone of this thread earlier, “My dad’s Ford can whip your dad’s Chevy.”
At least it hasn’t deteriorated to that. Has it?
My dad’s Raptor can whip your dad’s Flanker… Ooh, wait. That don’t sound right! [:P]
Great video.
A couple closing thoughs:
“…it’s not the machine, but the man in the machine…” - The Red Baron
" Only the Spirit of attack, born in a brave heart will bring success to any fighter aircraft, no matter how highly developed it may be." - Adolph Galland
Semper Fi!
hey cool!! i got that quote in my sig! and i totally agree.
AMAZING video. i’ve heard of all the wonderful things those russian aircraft can do, but seeing those things is a totally different thing.[tup][tup][tup]
One of my other favorites used to be on a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting poster, “Superior Thinking will Always Beat Superior Numbers”.
Dragonfire, my favorite was “we never promised you a rose garden” And to all out there I must admit It is a very sexy airplane. It might evan make my boom n zoom sexy list. Ahead of the P38 and F4, sorry to all my phantom phriends out there! But on the sexy list It ain´t evan close to Habu.
…wow
