The specific function is to look good at airshows. Speed is life. As I said earlier, if you are engaged with a lone enemy and this maneuver allows you to get a killing shot off then great. Otherwise you become a sitting duck with no energy. His buddy can pick you off easily.
Zugok,
The truth is out there and IMHO you should look for it.
oh come now… anyway, no if the fa-18 wad fitted with canard it could NOT match what you just saw. The maneuverability in the video was mostly a product of vectorable thrust nozzles.
Yes, forgot that. But oh well.
Very cool! I was getting dizzy!
Don’t the russians design the best stuff? too bad they have no money to build it with. a shame.
Here are some less awsome videos of soviet stuff. they have been set to music, sometimes producing strange results;

So it has good low speed handeling stall charicteristics, try that against a harrier.I´ve also seen a Blue Angel put a Hornet in a near vertical near hover attitude about 75 feet over a runway and then accelerate vertical. As for the elite vs regular question, I spent 14 years in the USMC and have lived in europe for the last 5.5 years. I can only say that I notice there are some very knowledgeable folks in this fourm who are right about now questioning your intel.
I believe that it is far more maneuverable than the harrier. Not only that but where as the harrier is a subsonic plane, the su-35 is capable of speeds in excess of mach 2. I do disagree that US special ops are average, but I DO think there are some airforces in the world with pilots that are just as well trained.
Several things on which to comment here, but let me first issue a disclaimer, in that I have never been in the military (wanted to desperately, but broke my back in high school). Does that preclude me from having an opinion? No.
Back in 1996, a friend of mine, who is an independent consultant to the U.S. DoD on many subjects, presented a few articles to me about some joint exercises which took place in 1995, between U.S. Air Force and Navy units flying against unified German units. The Germans were flying Tornados as well as Mig-29’s and Su-27’s; our units were flying F-15’s, F-16’s and F-18’s.
The Germans handed our heads to us on a platter in just about every engagement there was. The German pilots were better trained, and they were flying aircraft which were more maneuverable (sp?) and had far superior avionics and fire control. The Russians had radar with wider and longer reaches than that of the U.S. Fast engagement, slow engagement, long-distance “stand off” engagements, you name it, they whipped our butts. It was decisively, too. One U.S. official, who wished to remain unnamed, said that it was quite a shock to see our air forces get so soundly whipped. “We’ve always thought that we had every advantage over the Russians, but simply put, we do not.”
As far as our ground forces go, the U.S. special forces (“Green Berets”, Navy SEALs, Rangers, Marine Force Recon) are quite formidable, and very highly trained. But they are not necessarily the “toughest or best” in the world. We’d like to think so, but there are some others who are quite tough and very, very well trained.
This friend of mine, who is an ex-Ranger, has been on assignments and trained with the British SAS…and his assessment is that they are as highly trained as any “special ops” fighting force in the world. He has also trained with the Israeli special forces, one of their commando units (I do not remember their name or designation) and he ranks them right up with the SAS. He has stated that the U.S. Special Forces are among the world’s most highly trained…that was his statement. Not the best, not worst, but “among the world’s most highly trained”.
There’s my [2c] back.
And I love the U.S.A., I don’t think there is a better country on earth in which to live and raise a family. And if you don’t agree, OK, you’re entitled to your opinion.
Take care everyone.
Mitch
Excellent show. Thanks for sharing. As good as it gets…well i don’t know about that! Seems the boys from 1st TFW will be going operational before much longer with the Raptor and the world will soon get a serious look at some good sticks with a very hot piece of metal under 'em. The F-22 is gonna water everyones eyes…wait n see.
funny you mention the 1TFW(when TAC became ACC the airforce dropped the word Tactical from all of its commands so it is just FW) my father served with the 1st FW for 10 years in the 94th 71st and 27th Fighter squadrons and the F-15 was the best out there at the time and then all the sudden two SU-27’s show up at Langley and my father told me that the SU-27 was the most maneuverable aircraft that he has ever seen. but of course the SU-35 is the upgraded version of the SU-27.
Hey qqofsav, you here in Marietta? Also work on the program?
WOW, really awesome…
Never knew that a Su-35 was so manouverable.
Thanks for sharing!
Greetz
And I thought it was good from using it on Aces Combat 4! Even if the cobra is impractical, the overall manuverability is scary.
Man, I wish my car would break left like that!!![:O]
Would have saved me a hefty repair bill for sure![:(]
I personally feel, after ALOT of research, that most of the major acheivements in military craft, be it air or land, has been born from European block countries like Germany and Russia, and adapted to suit others needs.
Yes alot of folk would argue this point, but ask yourself this, where did most of the R&D people from WWII go after the war was over???
I dont see what all the fuss is about re- US training vs The rest of the worlds training.
So you can shoot people, I dont think that is a good thing.
I also dont beleive all the hype around the F-22.[:P]
With the money they spent, it would want to be something special.
Personally, and this goes with the money Australia spent on the Abrams, there are better places to spend your money!!
I’ll end the blah blah here.
But you have to admit, that SU 35 is one of the sexiest looking aircraft ever to fly!
Well, aside from the Sabre, and the Mig 29 that is[:D]
tweety1 Believe the hype. It is a true air dominance fighter.
I have to agree with tweety. I think the f-22 is a great fighter, but not so overwhelmingly superior as to make everything else obsolete. In the hans of well trained pilots MiG-29C or and SU-27B would have evry chance against it in my opinion. Also, lacking vectorabl;e thrust nozzles I doubt the f-22 will be as maneuverable as the SU-35. And the SU-35 just looks plain AWESOME.
Tanky is right, as much as it hurts me to admit it[:P][:o)]
Lets face it, image is everything, and the F-22 just dun’t look like something I’d wanna take home.
Now the Mig 29C, well thats a different kettle of fish…
I will say again from the opeval report:
“The Raptor operated against all adversaries with virtual impunity,” said Maj. Gen. Richard B.H. “Rick” Lewis, Air Force program executive officer for the F/A-22. “The ground-based systems couldn’t engage the Raptor, and no adversary aircraft survived. That is air dominance, and that’s exactly what the Raptor was designed to give us.”
The F/A-22 may not be as cute as some others but I’m willing to bet it is going to prove itself the king of the hill when it comes to controlling the skies over the battlefield. Vectored thrust - super cruise - stealthiness - and state-of-the-art avionics and fire control systems…to borrow from ol’ MC - you can’t touch this…
Don’t get me wrong, the other “next generation” jets are great, no doubt about it - I think the video plainly shows some awesome quickness and manuevaribilty…but we have yet to see the F/A-22 go thru its paces in a similar demonstration of its flying prowess.
For now I’m taking the General at his word and time will tell if its for real or just BS.
Kirby
And there is the definitive quote!!!
We have yet to SEE this pidgeon actually fly without a care in the world, and run the risk of it tearing itself apart when doing a vertical stall.
By all means it may appear to be impressive during testing, but like car manufacturers, after the testing is all said and done, you can still recall a model 12 months after the release.
As for the General, of course he is going to say ‘its the ants pants’.
You dont expect somene that involved in a billion dollar project to say’ It handles like a rusty Buick’ do you?
Wait and see folks.
