You know, it’s not really a word. It’s really shorthand for the german word for “assault gun” or sturmgeschutz or StuG. With german pronunciation, I would imagine we pronounce “StuG” as “Shtoog”. The german word for three is “dwei”. So you’d say “shtoog dreis”
Definitely not like “ugly”.
The shorthand for the “assault howitzer” is sturmhaubitze or StuH. I wonder what the pronunciation of StuH would be? “Shtooo??” I dunno. LOL
Mostly correct, StuG is short for Sturmgeshutz, which literally translated is like storm ordnance or blast artillery or something like that. It’s meaning is assault gun. The Germans love being wordy so they probably still pronounced it Sturmgeschutz even when it was abreviated. And three is “drei” with an r… dreis isn’t a word (although it is used in words as a prefix i.e. dreisprung, triple jump). [;)]
Next time I talk to my mom I’ll ask her, she’s full German and still lives in Germany so she’d be able to shed some light on the subject. [:)]
It’s funny, I know the correct way to pronounce it in German as “shtoog” but fall back into bad habits all the time and think/say it as “Stugly” all the time. [;)]
Correct, but in the sense of “gun” as artillery, or something bigger than a side arm or other personally firearm.
Sometimes people hear “assult gun” and think “AK-47,” which is actually an assult rifle. The German word for assult rifle is “Sturmgewehr.” The acronym for Sturmgewehr is StGw, and the StGw 44 was the first true assualt rifle sucessfully fielded in large numbers.
A lot of people confuses guns and rifles. Gun is widely used for everything that can shoot a projectile… which is wrong. A gun is a large calibre weapon, such as a tank main armament which generally has a low angle projectile trajectory with a high velocity. Pistols, revolvers and rifles do not qualify as guns. Even “Machine gun” is a wrong term. It should really be called “Machine rifle” as they fires the same round as most rifles…
Artillerie is something else. They are called howitzers and have a high angle trajectory with a low velocity projectile.
“Stug” would be pronounced “shtuug”. Being from Ajustria and speaking German, i often read phoentics and find the words are written out to be more guttural than they really are.
Stug III would be pronounced something liek this : “Shtuug drrai”.
Nah, it’s only the military that gets picky about this kind of terminology. Otherwise, we’d be buying our firearms at the “Ye Olde Longarms and Sidearms Shoppe” [:D]
Dictionary definition says a gun is a projectile fired through a tube. You could use air pressure (blow gun) or gun powder (fire arm). The Military may choose to use Gun to mean large caliber weapons as opposed to side arms, rifles etc. but that’s the military for you. I can’t explain why they do a lot of things the way they do!
