I managed to strip the chrome off my AMT 36 Ford parts using Windex, but the adhesive remains even after a long 2 day soak and a thorough scrub with a toothbrush. What can be used to remove the adhesive?

Hmm, if it’s adhesive left on, maybe Goo Gone would take it off?

Goo Gone uses the same chemical as paint thinner, petroleum distilates. Won’t it ruin the plastic?
I’ve found that Pine-Sol works great for stripping chrome, and doesn’t affect the plastic substrate.

Pine-Sol will definitely melt plastic if you let it sit too long. I have been witness to it before. I’ll try my handy paint stripper Simple Green and see if it will strip the dried adhesive.
(Simple Green contains the same base chemical as Pine-Sol, but not the additive in Pine-Sol that can destroy many plastics including styrene and ABS.)
I strip chrome and paint from plastic with Castrol Super Clean with no bad effects and a super clean piece of plastic ( sorry I couldn’t resist) The plastic can sit in it forever and do no damage.
I use Westley’s Bleach White, the stuff intended to clean white side walls on tires. A couple of hours soaking will usually do the trick and leaves no residue. It generally doesn’t even need to be brushed. I forgot some once for 3 days and the plastic suffered no ill effects.

A lot of people use it to clean the masking gunk off of canopies with no ill effects. As canopies are a form of plastic (I think, so don’t quote me), it should work. You don’t need to soak the plastic in the Goo Gone, just wipe on and wipe off.
The Castrol Super Clean seems like a great idea and it’s readily available.
Definately! Takes any paint off. real cheap too, I picked mine up at NAPA auto parts store
