I am making progress with my Revell model . I finished the painting humbrol gunship gray. Now I want to do a wash to get the lines out. What is the best colour to do this ??? I once tried with some light gray but it did not look right. Thanks for your help.
Gunship Grey is a very dark grey, so either Black or a 50/50 mix of Burnt Umber & Lamp Black should be OK for a panel line wash. Using a lighter color for accenting panel lines never looks right IMHO.
I just finished mine and used black for the panel lines. However, my method is a bit different then most in that I use acrylics over acrylics:
I airbrush on clear gloss (Gunze Acrylic) - not too heavy because I don’t want to seal too many of the panel lines with too much paint;
I use Citadel acrylics and mix my own panel wash (approx 80% water 18% black Citadel paint and 2% dishwashing detergent - I kinda eye this bit and add more paint if the panel lines are not coming up as vividly as I like)…
I don’t apply the wash too liberally in fact I try to get it in the panel lines as much as possible… let dry for 2-10 minutes then I rub of excess with paper towel (Citadel paints dry very quickly)… apply a bit of moisture to stubborn spots on the paper towel… you may need to re-apply wash if you rub it out of panel lines. The clear gloss coat ensures that the excess panel wash comes off quite nicely.
Lots of photos of the build if you care to see them
thanks for your answer.
You have great pictures of your F-15E. Can you tell me which colour did you use for the gunship grey. Mine is much darker and i do not quite like it.
I’m working on a Strike Eagle too, and Gunship Grey is much darker than thouse posted pics. I even added a decent ammount of white for “scale effect” in 1/72.
The main color I used was Gunze H305 [Gray FS36118]. Which is Gunze’s version of Gunship Gray as far as I know. I know some folks add a bit of white to it but to me the color is spot on when I compare to some of the photos I have.
