Can someone give me the definitive information on the status of Gunze Mr Aqueous Hobby Color (the aqueous acrylic line)? I hear that Gunze has pulled this line from the U.S. (which makes little sense to me). Is it available by any means in the U.S., on-line, or overseas? Thanks,
As far as I am aware, the Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color range was withdrawn from sale in the United States, to be replaced by the “Mr Color” (lacquer) line…
At the same time, the Aqueous range was reduced to reduce duplication of colours between the Aqueous Hobby Color line and the Mr Color line. All of the Aqueous colours above about H-100 (that means all of the FS, B.S. and RLM matched colours) have been discontinued), though the remaining colours are still available in some countries. The colours which were discontinued in the Aqueous range are now only available in the Mr Color range.
Depending on postal regulations regarding hazardous material, you may be able to order them from overseas - your best bet would be an Asian based seller.
I was able to order the Mr. Aqueous Colors from the Dragon USA On-Line website. It took less than a week from the time I ordered to to receive them. Excellent service!
You will find, however, that some of their more popular colors are not in stock.
Do you know of any suppliers in Australia that stock Mr Hobby Colour range?
It’s rediculous that Gunze would stop making those colours. I almost only use colours in the 300’s and 400’s. Plus, i’ve been using them for at least 15 years.
On top of that, my LHS’s only acrylics are Gunze and Tamiya (no testors of vallejo acrylics). I really don’t want to change to enamels for airbrushing.
Is the Tamiya acrylic range comparable to that of Gunze at all? I really only use their colours for german armour, so haven’t really looked into what they might have for aircraft.
Needless to say, i’m pretty upset and frustrated by this whole situation. It appears i’ll have to resort to buying online…which means little need to now browse the LHS and buy impulse items.
I recently asked my LHS what the status of the Gunze range was and whether they knew if the importer was planning to replace the now missing part of the range with the Mr Color lacquers. They didn’t even know that Gunze had another range of bottled paints. The only lacquer paints they were aware of were the spray cans.
Tamiya’s paints (colour-wise) tend to be “close but no cigar”. They have recently (I think within the last 6 months) released a number of colours specifically for WW2 RAF applications (perhaps to go with their 1/32 Spitfire) but otherwise, they don’t have specific (ie. FS, B.S., RLM/RAL) matches.
The only Aussie hobby shop I am aware of with a reasonable range of paints is Frontline Hobbies in Newcastle - They carry Vallejo, Lifecolor, a now shrinking range of Gunze Aqueous and Tamiya in acrylics. (I haven’t actually been there, I am just looking at their website).
I too would like to know if we’re going to get the Mr Color lacquers here in Australia. I have seen some of the Mr Metal Color range here though.
