So, I went out and bought some Woodland Scenics static grass yesterday to try out. I layed out a layer of thinned Elmer’s Glue on my dirt base, and took a pinch of grass at a time, dropping it onto the glue. After I got a good layer of coverage, I rubbed a “For Sale” sign on the carpet and used the static charge from that to draw the grass up.
BUT…
The grass only stood up about 1/8" (!). So, my question is, if you do this three or four or five times, will it come up taller? My issue is, I need this stuff knee or waist high on a 1/48 or a 1/35 figure.
OR…are there different lengths of grass available? If so, how do you tell by the labeling? Or do some manufacturers make different lengths, while some don’t? Hear my prayers and answer my queries, oh Diorama Gods!!! Very frustrated!!! Feel like I can’t make terrain to save my life right now.
There are grasses that come in different lengths. The scatter grass you have is fine for shorter grass. But if you want a whole field of waiste high grass, thats a long job. It can’t be done the same way the short grass can, at least i don’t think so. You can buy grass that comes in long strands and you cut to length. Verlinden do some, but you can also use an old paintbrush. You lay it, the only way i know of, is to take a clump, cut to length, make a small hole in the base and put the grass in secureing with some white glue. If there is an easier way i would love to here it as i would like to do a field of long grass.
I made a field of reasonable long grass using twine. I unraveled the twine, then spread a mixture of white glue and fine dirt onto the base. Then I held grass straight, in a bundle, and stuck it into the glue. Then I cut the clump to size. You can go pretty quickly using this method, and it would work for long grass from a woodland scenics or such to. Just spread the glue in sections. Tell me if that wasn’t clear, I can do a diagram or something, or upload a picture. I was very happy with the results.
I think Hans Von Hammer uses the twine/hemp rope method too. I’ll have to try that. Pretty disappointed in this stuff though. At least it offers a nice short, “underlayer” or bedding layer from which to work, so there’s that.
