Starting the 109 Scrap-Heap

For quite some time now I’ve been wanting to do a dio of a Me 109 scrap heap with a couple of GI’s souvenier hunting. I plan on using at least three airframes and several smaller assemblies (tails, wings, engines, canopies, etc. etc.) This is a project that I’ve been pondering for several years.

Anyway, my big question is this, what would the likelihood be of a 109-G6 sharing a scrap pile with a G-10 or even a k-4? I know it’s possible, but how likely? The time-frame I’m aiming for here is March '45.

The other question: Does anyone have a picture of the inside of the fuel access panel on the spine of the fuselage. Below , it’s the one on the port fuse half right behind the cockpit. In all of my references, I have nothing showing the interior of that little panel. Anyway here’s what I have so far. Talk about the journey of a thousand steps…

Should be interesting, I will be watching!

You could dig around in here…

You might wanna go in depth a bit more, I just used Google Image and “Luftwaffe Wrecks”…

I kind of am thinking about doing the same thing but in reverse: a KG 200 junkyard with a lot of Allied aircraft stripped of parts being surveyed by a 9th AF FAC in a jeep.

I’ve got some pictures I’ll scan. My father-in-law, during his spare moments from maintaining his own squadrons a/c, built one with some help, and even flew it once. He mixed pieces from at least three marks he thinks. Anyways he was an amateur photographer and as they were in the business of reusing captured airfields, took a lot of pictures of junked german and italian a/c. I’m going to see him when he gets back from Reno, and see what I can dig up.

Unfortunately, Army Intelligence took it away from him, but he did get to keep all of his negs.

Try Brett Green’s Gotterdamerung, it’s absolutely full of Luftwaffe wrecks, including plenty of 109’s.

Look forward to seeing the finished dio.

Karl

Thanks guys, for the great leads. I’ll post pics as I go. I did do a “test” display to practice using celluclay. It’s a Special Hobby Arado 96A. I plan on eventually getting some figures to turn it into a proper dio; something along the lines of an instructer scolding the fledgling pilot that put this one down a little too rough. I’ll entitle it “Let’s Review.”

Still, I’ve spent a couple of hours trying to see what the inside of that panel looks like, with zero luck.

Anyway, here are some pics. As always, comments and critiques appreciated:

Hey Bro,

Yea know, if a certain someone was actually back on earth with the rest of us humans, I am sure you’d have a definite answer… Hello Steve if your out there, please return to Earth ASAP…[:P]

MMm your Arado looks very familiar…!! I totally dig how you overcame some of the fit issues by making a crashed bird… Nice thinkin… Bet your glad you did not have to cough up 85 big ones for coffee huh? Haha

Sometime we are gonna have to sit down have some beers and talk shop!! I see bases made in your near future!!

Looking forward to seeing this dio come alive… PS, where are the sheep??

Flaps up,

Mike

I have a good reference for you for the fuel filler compartment…

FSM magazine did a special issue called “Warbird Modeling–Battle of Britain”. This was issued back in June or July 2005. In this issue, they do a build of a -109E, and the builder scratchbuilt that compartment open. I remember the issue, it had several clear shots of the detail. You may be able to find it through FSM, or sometimes you might get lucky and find someone selling old issues on ebay and other places. I bet I still have that issue somewhere, if I can find it I would be happy to scan color shots of the pages and send them to you free of charge.

EDIT–yes, I still have it. If interested, let me know.

F-8… You are my hero. I’ll PM you with my e-mail info!

Mike, Funny thing is, I have a bunch of those Preiser sheep left over and was going to put one on this display. My darn sheep get more comments than my airplanes, its starting to give me a complex [sigh]. And yes, the dio idea certainly was one of my bigger cop-outs. There truly was no way of getting the kit part to fit and I certainly wasn’t scratching it [}:)] I did learn alot with this simple display… like don’t build anymore Special Hobby kits on a time limit. [D)]

Hey Justen,

No worries about the sheep thing… I was only bustin your nards and besides, I think John was the one who started it!![:P]

I totally like your build even if it is a pain in the arsh and you got my juices going to do a dio like yours… Somewhere I have a Hase Spit which is a good canidate for a belly in!!

Funny you/I should mention sheep… My uncle has a few pix of some 17’s from his unit that crash landed for various reasons outside of the base and guess what?? Theres sheep…

It’s like a plane would crash and someone would go… Ah theres a good spot for sheep… Gotta love farms… Anywho, talk to you within a day or so!!

Justen,

This is not an actual reference photo per se, but it shows how one modeler detailed the area in question, thought it might help a little. [tup]

Frank,

Thats a great help. Thanks. I searched Hyperscale a couple of days ago. I don’t know how I missed that.

I’ll post pics as I go.

Mike, yeah, give me a ring when you get a sec.
