Can someone help me out here? I want to do a Starblazers Yamato. I have seen a few kits on evil-bay but which is the best as far as detail goes? Loved that show as a kid.[:D] Thanks for any help.
The answer depends on how much you want to spend. They have a number of excellent kits out there, including one with a removeable side to expose a detailed interior. I have seen them for between $40-60 on hobby store shelves even today… You may even want to check Hobby Link Japan, www.hlj.com
Starblazers/Yamato was my first fix in anime modeling.
The largest kit was in 1/500 by Bandai. Detail is kind of so-so (my opinion) but remember the source -the animated show never got into heavy detailing of it’s sibjects. In that sense it’s very accurate. It DOES make for an impressive sized Yamato when finished and there’s lot’s of room for you’re own detailing. I’ve seen that kit go for $80.00 when it was rare to as low as $20.00 when it was re-issued.
I think the removable side version was 1/700 scale. There’s a 1/1000 scace an a mini scale about 4 or 5 inches long.
I have the 1/500 scale and can post or email the parts if you want to get an idea what it’s like.
Bandai releases the old Starblazers kits in cycles. If it’s hard to come by now, give it some time. I second the thought to use Hobbylink Japan. Great service and a lower purchse price offsets the slightly higher shipping costs.
Yea, I loved that show to, was late to school everyday cuz of it. Ive got all the Earth ships there the only ones in a consistent scale as well as the individual fighters just cuz they’re cool. Rossjr is right about he pricing. I’ve got a “lot” of Deslocks ships, 4 to be exact, all about 9-12 inches long, I d let them go for non-evil-bay prices. You otta check out the 1/700 Andromeda. Looks great next to the Yamato.
You MIGHT be able to get it for under 40$. T.L.
“We’re off to outer space to save the human race”
“THIS IS MY GRACELAND!”
Isn’t that a line from a Prodigy song? I don’t remember the name, but it had a nice “boing” sound in it.
I’ll take your brain to another dimension. Pay close attention.

In english, I think the opening lines went:
“Wer’e off to outer space…”
“Wer’e leaving mother Earth…”
“To save the human race…”
“Our StarBalzers…!”
The 1/500 scale is nice. I found the fit of the deck the hull is poor, but other then that I was happy with it.
Here’s the theme songs:

One project that keeps bumper-caring around my head is to take an old American ship, to be a starship. My mind’s eye has a Nuclear Carrier, crossed with the Andomeda from the show.
