Nice kits everyone!
I started Spock today. The kit has some issues. Fit is terrible. I’m not sure why but the R2 reissue of the classic Spock kit went together better.
Here is a comparison of the new R2 classic Spock kit with the reworked TMP Spock:
The parts:
And I’ve actually glued some parts together!
Looks cool Mach71! I wonder if R2 cleaned up and improved the kit? Being from the late '70s I’m not too surprised with poor fit. Never built Spock but I remember some of the movie starships had some big issues with fit and other things like the very weak nacelle pylons on the movie Enterprise.
I’m trying to figure out what color to paint Spock.
The instructions call for light blue for both the uniform and the boots.
Watching the movie the uniform looks more grey.
I’m looking at Tamiya paints
PS 32 corsa gray
or AS 26 Light Ghost grey
also XF25 Lt sea grey or XF53 Dark sea grey.
Anyone have any ideas?
I’m kinda eyeballing the Polar Lights NX-01 Enterprise, but I;ll have to save up for that one. I wish I could slam down $200 for the kit, decals, lights and PE set. That would be great. Then eventually sell it on eBay for a nice little profit.
modelcrazy, that would be a bit pricey. Didn’t PL release a small NX-01?
Add a few LEDs inside it and a few modifications and it might look good for much less $$.
Yes they did/do, a 1/1000 I believe. I saw both at our LHS Saturday. I may go that route, the kit is $50 less and I’m pretty sure I could still find decals and PE for it if I wanted. I will go with decals this time. I built the 1701D several years ago and hand painted all those tiny little panels. That about drove me nuts, but it looked pretty good when I was done.
That sounds goods. I just checked the R2 web site and the small NX-01 is not listed for sale. I’m guessing they won’t do another run of the it. If you see it in the hobbyshop you might want to grab it while you can.
The large NX-01 is still for sale, listed at $69. That’s not too bad for a big kit.
Yeah, and that big one is 1/350 scale. That has GOT to be COOL! [:P] Your right, $70 ish isn’t too bad. The PE, lights and decals is what would jack it up to just shy of $200.
Maybe I could still swing that after some budgeting. But I’ll probably just end up with the 1/1000 OTB [:'(]
Yup. When all was said and done my 1/350 TOS E has so far cost me around $350! when I include the Light set, R2 and Paragraphix PE set, Decal set, mask set, and paint.
crazy
On the question of paint, this screen cap shows a more bluish tint in the uniform:
I spent the afternoon sanding seams on Spock. Here he is dry fitted.
His pointing hand looks really bad! The fit was really bad, a big overlap that needed to be sanded down.
I’ll have to get a coat of primmer on him to see what still needs attention.
Yeah, mach…everything I can gleen from looking around the net indicates that that particular uniform era was blue-grey.
Yeah, it’s one of those things where under different set lights it can look either more grey or blue. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
Oh no! telling a modeler not to worry about the color!
I think your right, I would like to paint it grey with a hint of blue.
I could break out the airbrush and mix the paint. But it could be hard to match for touch
ups. For this I would like to use Tamiya’s spray cans.
I’m picking up paint this weekend.
Does anyone have any strong opinions on the OS bridge color scheme or uniforms? The instructions seem to be close enough for jazz.
I’m not sure of the protocol but hobbytalk has a short thread on this.
I bumped into that recently. The photo callout is a good reference. I gotta eyeball the colors at the hobby shop, see what makes sense.
I gotta cue up a few OS episodes in the next couple of days and do lotsa of freeze-framing.
I’ll post what I settle on.

Cool, those are great sites guys! I have the bridge set too but want to light it, there is a cool lighting set for it.
Plus I thought I’d replace the figures, since I doubt I can get more 1/32nd figures that look much like the actors I figured I’d just do a generic set of officers to represent another starship.
PS: Just for fun I got a good chuckle out of these Trek paper plates for kid’s birthday parties- is it that hard to get their shirts the right colour!?! [:(]
NCC 1311!
They did not get much correct.
The Paragrafix set is really nice. but I don’t think it comes with lights, just the PE and transparencys.
I made a trip to the hobby store today and picked up some paints for Spock. I got a few light blues and a light grey. I’ll do some tests and see which looks best.
Hey Mach71 I guess I shouldn’t have used the term ‘lighting kit’ since it doesn’t include any lights! Not sure what you’d call it but I have a box full of LEDs and fiber optics cables left over from other projects to use. Just need those transparent parts and the PE and stuff.
Yow! I didn’t even notice NCC 1311 on the main hull! But the artist put NCC 1701 on the nacelles!?!?!! Gee, you think the artist just didn’t give a rip? To be fair maybe they didn’t give him any reference materials but still you’d think he wouldn’t use two registration numbers and show different colour shirts in each painting.
