Hello all!
So I have this Star Destroyer ready for washing and I have been thinking of doing a pin wash on it to keep it looking Sharp, however before I start I wanted to ask if I should use enamel or acrilic. As it stands the base coat is acrilic paint, but the clear coat I put on it is a lacquer.
Is a lacquer kind of the same as enamel and then want to use acrilic for the wash? Thanks all!
From my experience be careful mixing laquers and enamels. Laquer is a “hot” base, enamel tends to be “cooler” or less aggressive, slower drying.
Basic rule I live by is never top enamel with a laquer, other way around ‘should’ be safe, but without experimentation I’d still recommend a gloss clear acrylic layer before applying any wash.
As for washes, I almost always use heavily thinned enamel or artists oil paints on top of an acrylic clear gloss. Hope this helps.
You might want to consider an oil wash using a mild thinner like Mona Lisa brand. Not hot at all and very forgiving in how it works.
Good advice here from stikpusher. I would stress experimentation on scrap rather than the model itself.
