SR-71, RC model, 13 feet long

This is a truly amazing project that just absolutely staggers my imagination. Lance Campbell has been building and flying RC ducted fan and turbine jets for several years. I met him at a fan fly about 10 years ago where he had a turbine powered SR-71 model that I thought was huge. It is small by comparison to what he has been working on for the last 7 years. He designed and built a 13 foot long SR-71 and has recently completed two test flights with the turbines. The model has only a primer paint job, temporary fixed landing gear, no inlet spikes and several other concessions to initial test flights.

He has created a web page for his modeling and a complete section dedicated to the big Blackbird. You can read a series of updates covering the whole 7 years, (which is the best way to get an accurate handle on the size of this project) or start with the 11-28-07 update for the finishing touches leading up to the test flights. The last entry has a You-tube video of the test flight.

Now THAT is an amazing model! I flew RC years ago, and always wanted to try a turbine, but $$$ and lack of a paved runway at our field prohibited that. Thanks for sharing Darwin, very impressive stuff. [tup]

Wow. That’s a staggering project to take on. I’m glad that he’s flying it successfully after all that work! My hat is off this guy… although I wouldn’t want to have to store that monster! [#toast]

Thanks for posting, Darwin.

WOW!!! Thanks for the link, Darwin! That is one impressive aircraft! What are the specs on the engines. if I might ask? I am familiar with the little “fan jets” on park flyer aircraft, but this is a whole new realm…

Happy New Year!

A couple of quick facts that come to mind without researching the question:

Each engine:

Generates approximately 25 pounds of thrust

Consumes over 1 gallon of JP-8 jet fuel in 5 minutes

Costs $4,000

I am speechless on that! Utterly speechless!

The price tag is wow. But the product is beautiful.
