sPzAbt 505 "charging knight" ?

Hello All,

A few questions about this unit and it’s symbol.

Was this unit symbol used on both Tiger I’s and Tiger II’s?

Were Tiger I’s and II’s used at the same time or was there a transition from the I’s to the II’s?

Were the camouflage schemes similar, that is, soft edged or hard edged for both I’ and II’s?

Were there any other vehicles to carry this symbol, such as Panthers or Jagdpanthers?

Any and all help is much appreciated.

The can 'o worms have been opened!!!

Quickly, my 2 cents: both the Tiger I and II had the symbol that belonged to the specific army Tiger battalion–never seen it on any other AFVs…seen mostly soft-edged schemes on these vehicles, some three-tone, some two-tone…knights were different colors to denote company and black tactical numbers were carried on barrel base over a yellow background…

The Charging Knight emblem was used on both Tiger I and II of sPzAbt 505, but it was not applied to Tiger Is until the winter of 1943-44. The battalion lost all of it’s Tiger Is in the summer battles of 1944 on the Eastern Front and was sent back to Germany for rest and refit with Tiger II. The only time they had Tiger I and Tiger II together was after Jan 28th, 1945, when they received 4 Tiger Is from sPzAbt. 511. If you can pin down which Tiger and when, I can probably find a color plate for you. They were not equipped with any other type of tank or TD.

Too bad I just passed up a book on their combat history last week while I was in Portland…

As Manny said, the emblems were color-coded for companies, I need to find out which colors for which company.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I had a concern that this subject might illicit some “spirited” debate. Hopefully an attitude of respect for all board members will prevail.
