Sputnik, revisited

Some of you may remember that I scratchbuilt a Sputnik I replica for a film-production company a few months ago. Here’s a shot of it just before completion (in my backyard):

It’s finally made its small-screen debut. The model appears in the two-hour PBS documentary “The Boomer Century, 1946-2046” which debuted a couple of weeks ago.

It shows up in the first 20 minutes or so, in a 1950s-themed display behind the host.

Blink and you’ll miss it, but for what it’s worth, that’s my model!

Congrats, Matt!

Congratualtions, Matt! In your, and Sputnik’s honor:

From the song Surprise! by Leslie Fish:

Beep beep, boop boop, Hello there! (Gazhupa!)
Sputnik sails giggling through the sky (Hai! Hai! Hai!)
Red flags, red faces, jump in the race as
The space age begins with a surprise. (Surprise!)

The project wore out, and spiraled back to Earth;
On re-entry it burned up very soon.
Hail and goodbye to that upstart of the sky –
And in twelve more years a man walked on the Moon!
