Spring Fever...

Here in the Ukraine, the sun is warm and the birds are singing and the flowers are blooming, which is a huge distraction from the modeling-bench…Got to thinking: do your modeling habits change with the seasons?

Not in a wheelchair…

I hope so. I’ve been pretty lethargic all winter. The lack of sun and coldness of my hobby area, sort of turned me off. I’m hoping to get into action as it’s warming up and finish a few WIP’s. I also pretty painting during the warmer weather.

I was just thinking of this myself. We’re finally starting to green up here in Michigan. Starting around May, my building almost completely stops. Yard work(2 acres to maintain),lots of trees, big garden and landscape. Come early fall, my attention goes to salmon fishin, October bring archery deer season, running through Dec. Come January…it’s time to build again!!!

My modeling habits sure are gonna change. It’s spring now, so I’m going outdoors more thus less time on the bench. Plus as it gets warmer outside the more I’m going to be taking my mountain bike to the nearby trails and forests.[8D] Yoohoo!! Time for some fun in the sun![:D]

I’ll still be turning out builds every so often, but my build time will be even slower then it is now.[;)]

Well, my habits do change a bit because I get busier at work (seasonal business) and spend a LOT of time on my bike…but somehow I manage to squeeze in a lot of bench time, and seem to be able to finish stuff at about the same rate? The modeling bug never completely goes away, so the building never stops!

Yes they do. My building is done in a workroom, so no changes seasonally in there. But, all my painting is done in the garage so my finishing area is often affected by weather. High humidity days tend to curtail my airbrshing, but they are not too common around here. But the longer daylight hours have increased my time for working- I mainly do my painting using daylight from the open door. The other thing that curtails my builds during the summer is the scorcher days. Again not too many of those here compared to other areas.

Not really…except that on days when I’m doing airbrush work in the summer I have more time due to the longer days. Otherwise things just kind of hum along at the normal pace regardless of season. Not much maintenance required due to having a very small yard so that rarely causes much of a disruption.

Yes–when I’m racing.

Training, and bike maintenance takes most of my time. Like today–cleaning, oiling, and changing air filters. oil change, repairing a coolant leak (bad hose), lubing the chassis and all my zerk fittings, and repacking the silencer. Time invested so far…3.7 hours…

Then a bicycle ride to get the ol’ pumper up to par after a long, long winter!

Definitely. My work area is set up at the rear of my garage and it can get cold in winter even with a portable heater.

We’re heading into winter here in australia now and the temperatures are falling. My build times generally reduce by about half until spring as its harder to get motivated.

Once i get a room inside the house (waiting for one of the kids to move out) i’ll be able to work all year round. Bring it on.

Spring…go out, clean the gardens, mow the lawn, open the pool , maintain the pool, trim the bushes, etc, etc.

Yep, it eats into bench time. I only get maybe half the time I get in the winter.

Rounds Complete!!

Spring time means a few things for me.

  1. Summer Vacay, ALOT of build time.

and

  1. ALLERGIES, killer of build time

I get the feel good factor in the spring and do more all round, garden, work on house, work on my custom 51 leadsled Rocket 88, and loads of time out in the countryside with the familly. After that i may get in some modelling. But as i like to do my spraying outside i might get more finnishing done. As for allergies, every year now i get bad heyfever and spend most of my days sneazing and this year im suffering with my eyes as well (now where,s that model gone as i spray dessert sand down the door of my olds).[:-^]

…what the heck is that?

Not a car-guy, Manny?

1951 Oldsmobile Rocket 88… You know, back when American cars ruled the world and didn’t have those POS sissified girlie-names we have now…

Olds…gone

Pontiac…gone

when I read leadsled rocket I immediatly pictured calvin and hobbed crossed with mythbusters…

Sorry I’ve been absent form the forum–been getting the bike ready to go on Sunday. Had to change the air filter, oil, shock oil, lube all the bearings, and clean and repack the silencer.

Still ain’t done. Gotta change two tires and lube the cables.

It’ll all be worth it on Sunday though, when the glorious sounds of brrRRAAPP fill the air!

Ahhhhhhh!!! Now THAT’S music to my ears!!!

Yes and no. In the winter, my basement can get a tad bit chilly and I can ‘wimp out’ and not go there for a few days (weeks??) on end. In the spring/summer, my basement is far more pleasant (sometimes the most comfortable place in the house), but I also have more ‘out door’ chores to do. So, I’d say that it works out pretty even.

The one big advantage of spring/summer is the extended daylight - I’m more motivated when some natural light is pouring in through the windows…

This.
