Spraying Tamiya TS-13 Clear over Tamiya X-1 Acrylic Black Problem

Hi all,

I’ve used Tamiya TS-13 Spray clear on various finishes and over decals with no problems but on this car model where I had airbrushed Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black Acrylic on certain areas of the car body over the main base color of Tamiya Lacquer spray Champagne Gold, when I sprayed two coats of the TS-13 clear, the black areas started “dissolving” so I could see the Gold coming through in some areas of the black.

Has this happened to you? I’ve been very lucky using Tamiya Clear spray on various paint surfaces especially when I spray light coats. Maybe I sprayed my second coat too heavy? I know lacquer usually “melts” the paint layer directly under it but maybe I should stay away from spraying lacquers over acrylic even when the acrylic has dried for 2 weeks and even when the coats are light?

Now I’m not sure how to fix these black areas without remasking everything and re-spraying the black? Hand brushing would probably ruin the finish…

Thanks

Yes, lacquer is hot paint. I’ve used it over acrylics and enamels alike with no issues.

Two things comes to mind…

1 - spraying too close or too heavy a coat. Try spraying a couple light coats at a time.

2 - paint not dried between coats

Thanks. I think I sprayed too heavy a coat. Or it’s because this time I had thinned the Tamiya acrylic with Mr. Color leveling thinner ? Maybe the lacquer thinner in the acrylic reacted easier to the lacquer clear melting/fusing with the black coat? Next time I’ll try thinner coats or not using leveling thinner with a Tamiya acrylic if I plan to spray lacquer over it. Thanks
