Spock's flesh color

I didn’t know whether I should post this in sci-fi or figures.I am doing a build-up of the AMT vinyl spock kit for a customer, and there seems to be a problem with the painting of the flesh,to me Spock seems a pale flesh color with a bluish eye-shadow,my friend claims that spock has a green tint, since neither of us have TOS new DVD box sets,I told him I would post it here.I figured If anyone knew,it would be you guys and girls.Thanks.

Yep, Spock has a green tint. He’s Vulcan and has green blood.

True, Spock is a Vulcan and thus would have green blood - greenish skin tone…HOWEVER, Nemoy did not. I have yet to see any image of Spock, be it from TOS, TMP, or TNG, with a greenish skin tone. Dont forget, Spcok is not 100% Vulcan, his mother is human.

They tried green makeup, but at the time a lot of people were still using black and white TVs and they didn’t like how the green makeup looked in black and white so they scrapped that idea and just made him a bit pale.

The guys in the editing booth also tweeked it. The story goes, they were trying to make Vina green and so they made her up, filmed, waited for the prints and she came out pink. They used differing amounts and types of green to no effect. Still pink! Her skin was raw from the stuff and the later removal. Finally they summon a guy from processing “What do we have to do to make this poor girl come out Green.” “You WANTED her green? We’ve been color correcting.” They thought people would adjust their sets trying to correct things. In the end of Khan and in some shots for Trek Remastered, he has a green cast. These are usual in cases where a human would be pinker, like when ill or exerted, bruises got greened up too.

Yes, he has copper based blood and his skin does have a very light, greenish hue, but it is hard to catch. If you paint him flesh tone, he’ll look great. To much green and he’ll look like a martian, or like he’s seasick.

Thanks guy’s,I decided to go with a pale flesh tone due to scale, and he would look like Frankenstein, with even the most pale of green hues, and I am sticking with the fact that spock is half human.Thank’s again, for your help.

Just curious. What Spock kit are you building?

Rogue

I’m building the old amt/ertl Spock kit.I was not expecting much in the face, after building the Kirk kit,but this actually looks like Spock. The face is alot better sculpt,as this is a hollow vinyl kit,I always fill the legs with Durham’s water putty or plaster for weight, and use newspaper or tissue paper for the top half.I have learned vinyl kits will sag and lose there shape,if the temperature in your home reaches close to 80 degrees, when my A.C. went out a few years ago!Celluclay is good for stuffing the top half, but takes awhile to dry lightly moistened tissue or news paper dries quickly.I have not had one vinyl kit sag or warp, since using this technique.I picked this kit up on e-bay,mint in box, sealed for $10.00.I am scratchbuilding the science officers station of the bridge, complete with lighting for the base instead of the transporter pad included in the kit.Blessings.

I just finished reading Inside Star Trek: The Real Story by producers Solow and Justman, and it is a GREAT read about the Star Trek universe, if a bit depressing towards the end. There were many, many foibles with both makeup and the color correctors in the booth, trying to get that “damned yellow skin tone” off of the “alien guy” . Some of the makeup just did not photograph well at all, and with NBC going on to become the “first full color network” with an all-color lineup for the 1967 season the race for more and more color was on.

Currently there are single episodes of ST: TOS running at the 9PM slot in my local Fox affiliate. These are cleaned-up digitally…and I might add some outside beauty shots have been added that were either NOT in the original or have been so cleaned up and re-done that they look new altogether and are unregnizable. During the closeup’s on Nimoy you can now clearly make out the demarcation line on the ear latex casts, and the sink lines in his nose from the large glasses Nimoy preferred in those day. It would seem that we can clean things up a bit TOO well now…

for my own small scale (andrea miniatures 54MM Space Officer ) I plan on undercoating the skin tones with a green to allow the hue to come through, knowing that base coats influence our final color. In that scale, that will be sufficient. It is a great cast and fantastic likeness of Mr. Nimoy.

Spock’s flesh color!?!

Really…I’m speechless.[(-D]

You see, this is why I hate to post, somebody always has to be a smartass, yeah I said it.I only asked about the color for opinions, and due to the fact I am half color blind in the red/green spectrum, because I stared at the desert for 3 years, with uv protection,so you give me a break, pal.I gave you one when I bled for your freedom of speechlessness.your name suits you.I hope you remain speechless,as it seems you rub everyone the wrong way.

Don’t let it get to you, merkin. Those types of attitudes are definitely in the minority here. Just consider the source and move on. You really are among friends, so keep posting and have fun. [tup]

Thanks,Mike, after reading all of his posts I think he is more interested in just getting under peoples skin,as opposed to modeling, whatever happened to if you can’t say something nice or positive, then just say nothing.I pity him, with his "nerd alerts"comments,it is a shame due to censorship and the children that read these posts, that I can’t post what I would like to really say,but I’m sure he is one of these tough guys, with a keyboard and mouse,LOL and would probably pee his pants if he ever had to be in real combat,I will be expecting a PM from him, with his keyboard and mouse, locked and loaded, make sure the mouse is not set to full auto, you could take your foot off.

LOL! How true!

Glad you decided to stick around. You’ll find answers here to just about any question you post. In fact, sometime soon I’ll be posting a question very similar to yours, as soon as I get around to starting my 1/8 scale resin ‘Predator’ figure. [swg]
