SPLINTER CAMMO!!! HELP!!!

Hello, since no one is answering my last post, I thought i’d narrow down my question… so here goes. I got 2 fallschirmjager kits and a 352nd volksgrenider kit, ardenns style. I am experimenting right now on splinter camo, and I can do everything till it comes to the splinters on the uniform… I DONT KNOW HOW TO PAINT THEM!! [:(] I’ve tried dryburshing them on, i tried takin a sewing neetle and painting them individually, and a whole mess of other stuff [xx(] its JUST NOT WORKING… I dont want to waste 3 kits that arnot sold around here anymore, but i also dont want to settel with less than satisfactory work. plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz help me. Thankyou.

About the only way that I can think of to do it within reason is to get the smallest possible brush you can … a 10/0 or a 20/0 should do the trick. You can find them at most arts & crafts stores like Michaels. Dry brushing wouldn’t get the amount of paint on that you need and using a pin or a toothpick will leave streaks.

wow that was fast, and thanks for the reply but do you think there would be an easier way than just painting each stripe??? I have alot of patients so if it comes to that I will but I dont want to wast 5 days of my life on one figures right leg.

Patience … patience … patience. Just wait until you paint a King Tiger in splinter camo … it’s done the same slow way.

who says im gonna be painting a king tiger in splinter camo lol

You might be able to put a dissimilar clear coat between the colors, and clean up the edges that way. (acrylic base coat, enamel gloss, acrylic 2nd color, clean edges w/alcohol or water) Good luck !

I think the easiest way to paint this camou is first applying a base coat of olive-green. Then all that is left are two colours to apply with a fine brush, a brown and a desert tan. At this scale not sure if you want to replicate the fine random striping… maybe after everything is weathered a light scoring with an exacto blade would suffice.

thats a great idea jeratic, base coating it with the splinter color, then apply Future to seal it. Once the camo colors are applied use a #11 blade to lightly score the splinter lines on. The base coat will show through the camo.

Looks like someone found a sale on exclamation points. [;)]

Paint your base colors first. Then use a #11 x-acto blade and make little scorings in the surface. Not real deep just enough to score the surface. Then go over it with a wash of the “grass” or “splinter” color. The wash will collect in the scoring and wipe away from the surface. Sort of a figure scrimshaw.

I like that idea renarts, I’ll try it on one of my test figures. also, I really wanted someone to answer this post, which they did so I used as many !!! as i could =D

Splinter camo in the smaller scale figs is tough and is not a quick paint unfortunately. When it is done it always takes a while but the payoff is big if its done well. It is a showpiece subject and can be a really nice enhancement of a fig. Ive started playing with the spring and fall patterns. A friend of mine does WW2 re-enactment and belongs to both a Wermacht and an SS unit so I get to see his gear up close and personal. It nice to be able to look at the stuff and break it down into its components and invaluable to see just how all that personal gear like mess kits, gas masks and stuff attaches. It allows me to take the figures to a higher level of detail.

That technique has worked pretty well for me and so far is the easiest and best way I’ve found. Although its tedius, its worth it I think.

Good luck
Mike

well… ive runied about 7 test figures out of like 20 that i have set aside, so unless someone has a technique for me that is easy, I am putting up my project for a while and doing something different. =D i thought it would be pretty kool to do a 1:72 scale dio, and today in Spanish class I came up with the perfect one, and found all the kits i need. and I made sure they were simple. so I’ll be dragging out all of the 1:72 scale figures I hacked apart or ruined so i can fool around with paint schemes on them before i get the figures. =D It will also b an ardenns dio like the last one was going to be. wish me luck… I’m gonna need it.
