Spitfire Mk. IX Exhaust question

I’m in the finishing stages of my Mk.IX Spitfire and I have a Ultracast resin exhaust set. Any of you guys have any suggestions on painting them to look like the real deal? So far I have a coat of Burnt Umber on them, but from there on I really don’t have any suggestions. I guess my brain is tired…

Any help would be great!

Something like this?

Exactly like that! I’m just not sure how to get the effect done right. Any tips or pointers?

Clear orange, clear yellow, clear blue. Maybe dry brush those colors also in an enamel or acrylic. Does a lot of the stack show?

I’ve found a mix of colors (tamiya’s metallic grey, about 10% with red brown at about 90%) (model master’s rust about 90% with steel about 10%) works out well for me, and I spray that on in one coat rather than trying to layer. You may have to ‘play’ a bit with ratios to get the look you want, but it generally comes out nicely. A little wash and pigments over top, I always find I’m happy with that.

Just the pipes coming out of the engine cowling, so basically it would be the top portion showing.

I would like to have the clear blue look that hot metal attains after a period of time. I might try to lighten the stacks behind the first pipes with your suggestion AndrewW and add a touch of clear blue to see what happens with that.

Eighth,

Forgive me for forgetting to bring this up in my last post, a busy morning, but with the above mentioned mix when I recently did the pipes on my spit mk. vb, I used Mig Productions ‘burnt steel blue’ pigment (I think it’s a relatively new release for them, though I could be wrong). I’ve tried in the past mixing in an amount of clear blue to the above mentioned paint ratios, but never really was happy with the results. I personally found the pigment to be just the ticket for the look I was after, as I could apply more or less, remove it if it was ‘too much’ much easier than removing paint.

Probably all a matter of personal preference and I did have to wait a bit of time for the pigment to arrive by mail order.

I like this idea a lot better and it is easier than mixing paints, which I really try to avoid like the plague…

I checked and Sprue Brothers does have it, so I’ll order me some and give it a try.

Thanks again for the input and the advice!

Powders should give the best results after your initial sprayed coat. Note too when looking at reference photos of those aircraft that are still flying: rarely, if ever, is the whole exhaust uniformly dis-coloured. Instead you will see some differences from one stack to the next. Some gray soot is something else you can add to the finish.

Heres my method (assuming your using an airbrush):

  1. Paint them flat black (I use Tamiya Acrylics)

  2. Use Tamiya Red Brown XF-64 cut with 91% Alcohol. It should have a dusty/rusty appearance.

  3. Lightly dry brush with a silver enamel (I use Model Master Chrome Silver or Foquil Old Silver)

  4. Give them a black wash (I use a pre made Acrylic wash called “The Detailer”).

Done…It should look just like those pics. Heres the exhausts on a few of my Spits to give you an idea how it will look.

Hope this helps…

Joe,

I really like the effect on your Mk. VIII? I think I’ll give this a try because the slight rust effect is what I’m going for.

I love the Spits Joe, great job!!

Jack, you’re right, each stack is different than the one before so I’m going to try to incorporate a little of Joe’s suggestion with some of yours and see what happens.
