As I finish one and start to wrap up Hogzilla, I’ve started my next big project. It’s a P-38 inspired Spitfire. I’m using 3 Revell 1/48 kits to do this one, plus bits and pieces from other kits. It’s gonna take awhile to do, but I thought I’d post what I’ve so far.[:)]
Nice start, Eddie. Is this going to be a ‘realistic’ what-if, or more in the vein of your B-25 pusher project? Not that I care either way - it’s sure to be another interesting ride!
This is the extent of it. I’ll be doing the gear like a P-38 and give the nose a more aerodynamic shape, but nothing out into left field as it were.[8-]

Why is it left field and not right?
Go on do a tail wheel. It`s not a Spit without a tail wheel.
If it went into American service would it be the Deuce ann`a Half.
If you are going to have a horizontal plane between the rudders, maybe you can have the lower half of the tailplane (the underside, I mean) extend down when landing, with a concealed tailwheel attached to the back edge. That way it can act as an airbrake as well, what with those turbojets sitting in the background that would look just right arrayed on either side of both booms.
But, if you just wanna have a regular old everyday twin-boom Spitfire…
Hmm, makes one wonder how a P-38 would have performed if it had supercharged Merlins instead of its Allisons. I wonder what kind of beast the P-51 might have been if it had a Griffon engine like the late Spitfires.
I’m sorry. But I just can’t belive how beastly this thing looks withOUT a horizontal tailplane! If you included one, I would think it would look too much like a P-38 with a different nose.
If you had to include anything, just try using the kit taiplanes, no connection. Wait, then it’d look like a Zwilling… What about this? Only include the INNER tailplanes on each boom. Or maybe find a way to canard them suckers…
Whatever you do, just remember how cool it looks WITHOUT them. [;)][tup]
Sorta like something out of “Crimson Skies”…
Edit: Or, if you insist on keeping the horizontal connection, at LEAST put the vertical stabilizer right behind the cockpit. Now how awesome would THAT look? [}:)] But, then again, you may no longer be able to tell it’s derived from a Spitfire, and if that’s what you’re going for then, well… at least you have some more ideas, right? [:D]
Lucien’s right - that would look too much like a P-38.
How about you run a V-shaped center stabilizer up to the rear of the center fuselage - that would give them a sort of deck to step out onto for a smoke on those long flights. Maybe a barbeque out there, and a keg… [}:)]
Probably the same sort of result as taking the Allisons out of the Shouldangle and putting in Merlins.
Eddie,
If your gonna keep a Spitfire outline, hows about tailplanes on the outer faces on the twin booms, leaving the insides clear for a remote tail turret. Why a tail turret?, with turbocharging its gonna be a mover and the target may just not stay in front long enough in a firing pass.
Whatever i`m REALLY looking forward to what you do to a national icon, so just like the anchors- “Miller Away”
As I said before, I’m left handed, so that why I said it. If I was right handed, I might have said “out of right field”. If I was ambidextrist, I might have said center field. Don’t ask me why I said it, as it was the voices that TOLD me to say it. I don’t argue with them when they are on a creative streak.[:-^]
Those all very good ideas. Y’all are making it easy for me by troubleshooting it before I get too far along and make a wrong move. I was thinking of using the full tailplane, but now I’ll have to see, because I really want to keep the Spitfire lines. I had wanted to try to confuse some folks by mixing it up good with a Lightning, but now…I may have changed my mind. We’ll wait to see what the voices say…[;)]
The first pic does sorta say “tail- no, wait… um… rear… fuselage… nacelle turret”, don’t it? [:D] And I think just the outer tailplanes would stay true to the Spit heritage, whilst allowing a clear field of fire for the turret, methinks.
Guess what? I just got all Medieval on ya! [}:)]
Just kidding. Seriously though, I don’t think I’ve ever gotten as worked up on ANY of your builds as this one. HOPEFULLY it’s a good thing.
Whatever you decided, I look forward to seeing it.
Thank you! No pressure, right?[;)][(-D] As with any of my other builds, things will take shape as time passes. Hopefully the end will justify the work, but I really appreciate everyone’s input. As with every one of my projects in the past, ideas from you guys have made important changes and directions to the final outcome.[:)]
