Spent Shells.

Hello Fellas

I will be starting a new diorama soon and I got to wondering. How do you model spent shell casings from infantry weapons ,.50cal.,.30ca,ect.? [?] I thought it would lend to a sense of realism and of combat to the scene. Any ideas or tips would be appreciated and welcomed.

Thanks Fellas.

I’ve not done it but an appropriate diameter plastic or metal tube with disks made with a punch and die for the ends would be a start.

mission models makes linked 50 caliber ammo as well as spent shell cases and links for the50 Caliber

You can make them out of plastic rod of the proper diameter. I use 0.10 for 5.56 and .30 cal, 0.20 for .50 cal. Painted brass for casings and black for links. They look pretty good in 1/35 scale.

Here’s how they come out.

I used the Mission Models empty .50 cal shells on my latest project:

.30cal shells would be pretty tiny. The idea of mating bits of rod to a base made with a punch is too crazy for me… Just use the rod. Who could see the cartridge lip?

Go with the appropriate size plastic rod for the casings

A simple way to replicate infantry shells in 1/35 is to take golden colored brass wire and simply cut off little peices. Fast and easy! [:D]

Heat and strech some spru to the correct diameter and cut to the correct length. Simple and free. Greg

Hi there,

I’ve used the plastic swing tags that you get attached to clothes which hold on the tags/labels etc. Paint these brass and cut up to 2mm in length. If you’re doing this then try and cut them in a clear plastic bag, that way they don’t shoot off all over the room. For 1/72 scale you could use the really thin fuse wire which is already brass coloured.
