Sova-M Rutan Voyager 1/72

I bought Amodel’s Voyager many years ago and was really disappointed in the overly wide fuselage. The kit was also very rough and chunky looking. Now Sova-M brings us a new kit of Rutan’s amazing Voyager.

Although I consider Sova-M, Amodel, Modelsvit and a few other Ukrainian kit manufacturers closely related (someone correct me if I am mistaken), this kit is fortunately all-new and has no relation to the older kit.

The fine detail still looks chunky, but overall it looks much better than the Amodel kit. Perhaps the canopy would benefit from a vacform replacement, and the cabin side windows should have squarer corners. I need to exhume the Amodel kit and my notes on the Voyager and do a comparison.

This is the book I believe I read that inspired me to seek out a kit of the Voyager:

Voyager Richard Rutan, Jeana Yeager & Phil Patton Illustrated HB/DJ Book Signed | eBay

It was an interesting read, as it traced the planning, construction, testing and record-breaking flight of the Voyager. My only caveat is that old adage about not learning too much about your heroes. But then, I think it is the same for any famous personality who accomplished great things - they are in the end human just like the rest of us.

That looks like it’s going to be a fun build!

I saw the Voyager when it was hanging in the entry of the Air and Space Museum in D.C. back in 1987. Simply amazing. Keep us posted on your build progress.

Will do.

I had a closer look at the parts, and they are ROUGH! But at least the overall shape looks good. The outer wings look like they may need stronger tabs to keep them from being knocked off.

Please do a build log of this model. Inquiring minds need to know!
