Southern California Modelers Club/Shows/Contest.

Hey pretty new to all this but im looking to find out what the model clubs are about or any in my area? and im intersted in entering a contest etc etc, shows etc.

There is an AMPS chapter that meets in Santa Ana on the second Saturday of every month. There are also several IPMS chapters in the area. Today is (was) Orangecon, the Orange County IPMS chapters annual contest. We meet on the third Friday evening of every month in La Habra.

What part of So. Cal. are you located in?

I’m in the city of victorville. So i was hoping their was one near by. I just finished one on my models too. lol the bad part on my final construction I droped a hand cranked sharpener on my plane, remember the old metal ones! I did it on my final stage of compleation!

I think the closest IPMS chapter to you is in Ontario, unless there is one in San Berdoo or Riverside area. Not a far trip for you, but not neighborhood close. On Saturday when AMPS is going you should have an easy drive unless it is a day when everyone goes to the beach in summer. A bit over an hour or so. (if you drive like I do…[:-,])

Sorry to hear about the pencil sharpener mishap. I have had a couple of my plane kits take unintended flight when caught by gusts of wind between my work room and painting area in the garage. These usually resulted in may colorful expletives and creative repairs.

Just for the heck of it. what is a modeling club for? is it like a car club? get togethers, trade tech questions? Is it possible to start on where i live?

There is a contest coming up in Lancaster: http://www.avg-ipms.org/contest2009.html on November 7, 2009.

Yes, something along those lines. At meetings there are show and tells, contests, workshops, swap meets, bull sessions, and pretty much anything you can think of related to the hobby going on. As far as starting one where you live, check and see if there are any nearby first. If not, then see about starting one up.

Hey AA554

There’s a big model car show in Victorville on the 22nd of November, if that’s your thing. If nothing else, a lot of guys do build different types of kits.

Our IPMS and car club get together all the time here.

I’m not really into cars but you never know! But I’d like to think there are military modelers in the High Desert … in fact in one of the current issues their was a letter in FSM from a guy in Victorville! http://www.ipms-ontario.org/ is the closest one but i’d like the H.D. should have there own! So i’m wondering on how to start a High Desert Plastic Modeling Club? Hummm you say the 22nd huh I might just go to see! any ideas or concerns, hints, help, facts, etc etc would be helpful. Or any one wanting to help make one call me at (760)-881-1253 [8D]

The next So. Cal. AMPS meeting is on the afternoon of Sat 11/14, if anyone here is interested.

still looking on help on the subject, bump!

Heya, Archangel,

The Los Angeles Miniaturists meet in Burbank every first Saturday of the month… We’re meeting this Saturday, November 7th.

It’s a great club with all skill levels and areas of interest: armor, figures, sci fi, airplanes, farm equipment (!), militaria, etc. The club’s structure: 1) show and tell (bring a model in any state of completion!); b) demo of a modeling technique (this month I think is figure painting by the amazin’ Dave kennedy; c) raffle… Coffee and donuts are provided…

The meeting officially starts at 9:00 AM but doesn’t really get rolling until 9:30 AM or so. Meetings go until about 1:00 PM Yearly membership gets you some nice discounts at local and region hobby shops, (up to 20% at Burbank’s House of Hobbies, for instance — by the way, I work part time there…) which is a nice perk.

http://www.losangelesminiaturists.com is our website.

We meet at the USS Gudgeon VFW post at 1002 West Magnolia Blvd. which is one block East of Victory, across the street from the car wash.

Hope to see you there!

Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

What is AMPS? Where in La Habra do you meet? Time?

AMPS is Armor Modeling Preservation Society. As the title implies it is dedicated to armor modeling. I am fairly new member there, but if you build armor kits I would highly recommend having a look see for yourself. I will not be at this months or next months meetings due to family commitments, but if you are interested I will forward you their info about the meetings.

IPMS meets at the La Quinta Inn on Valley View and Orangethorpe right off of the 91 on the 3rd Friday of every month. Meetings are supposed to start around 7-7:30 but with traffic delays (I’m sure you know the 91 on a Friday evening) they can run a bit behind schedule.

Hi Stikpusher,

I’d like to try to hit the AMPS meeting this saturday, but I can’t find anything online about time/location. Can you pop me a PM or point me to a website with the information?

Thanks\

Bill

I will see what I can send you Bill, I should be getting an email this week with the info for the upcoming meeting. PM me your email address and I will forward it to you.
