Guys, I’m always commenting but never building any armour so if I may here’s Academy’s modern South Korean K1A1 I built over on Stikpusher’s Korean War (past and present) Group Build.
The Tank: Academy’s excellent K1A1 built mostly from the box. I added about 2/3 of the parts from MK1 PE set for the kit, omitting some of the more tiny finicky parts. I also added a resin bustle rack to the back of the turret from I think Lion Roar (not sure where the box is to check), I free-handed the camo and then made my first serious attempt to use filters which I really liked how they worked out. I finished with some pastel ‘mud’ on the skirts which may still need some work.
I’m afraid there is still a seam on the front hull which I didn’t glue together till after painting so I can put the treads on afterward. I still need to fix this!
The Figures: The crew is a mixture of the original figures and Academy’s South Korean tank crew with two heads replaced with Hornet’s East Asian heads. The young ladies are from Preiser’s 1/32 nudes- oddly being 1/32 they’re taller than the tank crewmen… I think straight matt varnish on skin tones look too dull so they were airbrushed with a mixture of 1/3 gloss to 2/3 flat to get a dull semi-gloss but for some reason the camera makes them look way shiny [:S] I suppose I should have fashioned more clothing for them but the figures are so nicely detailed I hated to cover it up.
I hope they don’t get me banned like Manny’s stripper figure… [:$]
Very nice work! The tank looks very good, and your figures look excellent! I agree that the girls look a little too shiny, but otherwise, they look great!
Very nicely done! First I’ve seen of this kit being built up and it looks real good from here. Paint, stowage, base/groundwork and figures make this a pleasure to look at!
I’m sure that I would’ve come to a screeching halt (too)! [:P]
Great kit and a fun build. Only mistake is I’m not sure the PE was even worth it. Academy’s Second World War kits are good though not Tamiya or Dragon quality. This kit was fantastic though, the detail on the grills on the engine deck is almost as good as the replacement PE parts.
The tread marks in the grass were fun and easy. I just put a round cutting tool in my Dremel and started gouging out hunks of plaster and static grass! Hit it with a little tan paint and then a wash and I was done.
Bronto: I liked the rear-ending a car idea but I couldn’t find a 1/35th scale Kia or other Korean car and I’m too lazy to scratchbuild one.
Stikpusher and Bbrownii: Sweaty and glowing? Gee, you guys trying to get me tossed in the cooler by the moderaters like Manny with his stripper figure? The cooler already smells like Manny- that is old bratwrust and frustration… [;)]
