South African Air Force

Maybe I should post this under “reference,” but I always seem to get better answers from the “airplane” guys. I’m interested in building a jet sporting the old springbok roundel style of the South African Air Force, ca. 1947-57, prior to the springbok in the fortress style markings. I know the SAAF flew the Sabre with these markings, but I was thinking of maybe building a Meteor Mk III (they tested one on loan from Britain) or a Canberra.

My questions are: 1 - does anyone know if that Meteor had the springbok roundels, or did it have British Commonwealth markings; 2 - what years did the Canberras enter SAAF service; and 3 (and most important) - where, oh where, can I find the springbok roundel decals? I’ve done search after search on different hobby sites & Ebay, but nada! I’m looking for 1/72, but I suppose 1/48 could work on a 1/72 Canberra.

Good day Phantom fan

South Africa

Thanks for that link - they had the decals & information I was looking for. That’s what I love about these forums - someone, somewhere will be able to help out.

Its a pleasure post some pics of your SAAF aircraft when you are finished.

Here’s my SAAF T-6. Easily my favorite T-6 scheme.

Hey Spooky,

What colors are the fin flash? Is that black/white/yellow? I’t hard to tell in the photo because of the bright orange.

it’s dark blue, white and reddish-orange.

Ditto I got decals for my Shak from them. They’re things of beauty- the gold is a seperate decal separation, metallic.

One thing to note is they have a constant carrier film so you have to cut out the decal carefully, well worth it.
