Today my son has a request I am surprised I have never thought of, being a big Peanuts fan. He asked me how come I have never built Snoopy’s airplane?
About melting my heart, I have set out to work. I have decided that Snoopy probably flew a Sopwith Camel F.1. So I saw Academy has a F.1 in 1/32 that is a single seater fighter, much the way the cartoon portrays it.
I did confirm my son did mean the actual plane and not the dog house…
So, I have the plane, but now I need the dog. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to model a beagle that could actually fly a 1/32 Sopwith? I really have the feeling my son cares more about Snoopy being in the plane than knowing it is a replica of the real plane.
Don’t worry, I am sure sometime in the future I will be asking - " How in the world can Academy make A.R. Brown’s Sopwith and not the Red Barons Fokker in 1/32 ???"
Any thoughts as to how to approch this would be really appreciated.
Check around for a store that sells the die cast models of farm equipment. I think ERTL makes a lot of the farm machinery models, so check their web site. There are also scale animals to go along with the machinery, a scale barnyard so to speak. I think I remember seeeing scale buildings too.
Are you with me so far?
I have seen amongst the farm implements, and the farm animals (chickens, pigs, cows), scale domestic animals including dogs (and cats).
Believe it or not there are as many, if not more, folks that are into this stuff than there are NASCAR collectors! The only places I have seen this stuff is in rural areas in the toy sections of places like Pigly Wigly grocery stores, or the IGA.
Honest, I’m not yankin your chain!
I think you might have some luck looking at the ERTL web site or try searching for “miniture” farm animals, or “farm toys”. Try contacting the nearest FFA (Future Farmers of America) organization, and I bet whoever you talk to will be able to lead you to a collector who will know where to find this stuff in IL, like in Rantoul.
You must be in the Northern part of IL, or you would already know about this stuff!
Honest, I’m not pulling your leg. This stuff really exsists. If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would not believe it either. (tongue in cheek) rangerj
Take a close look at what, who is sitting on the leading edge of the red & white thing in my sig block. Several years ago (about 30) a model company had cartoon caricature of a DR-I and a Nieuport with oversize pilot bust of Snoopy and Richtofen. I kept Snoopy and used him on my weirdo machine. [alien]
ACtually I have quite a few of their tractors and some farm implements. I mostly collect 1/64 (because they go with most Hot Wheels and the like) but I do have a few of the 1/18 stuff. Most of mine came from Tractor Supply Company. While in TSC check out the Animal Health section, the sell scalpels and syringes there that I have found quite useful.
Roden is coming out with an all new 1/32 Fokker DR-1 BTW. I think the Hallmark suggestion is a good one. I know they have made Christmas ornaments featuring all of the Peanuts gang including, of course, my favorite Beagle.
Thinking about the Hallmark idea, I think I saw a Snoopy Oranment with the leather head gear and gogles used durnig WW 1. Might have to hunt that down and see what I can do with it.
I thought you might have been thinking about building the old Monogram “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron” set. This is the set that Yardbird is talking about and was a big hit with kids.
If you can’t find the ornament, how about getting the snoopy ‘red baron’ pez dispenser and using the head off of it. The body couldn’t be too hard to build… Btw, that snoopy kit on ebay is awesome.
I built the old Snoopy kit from Monogram. Loved the working engine and the doghouse stand.
I vote for that one.
One of the guys in our club did a Snoopy vs Red Baron in 72nd.
